The manual explains the optical laws of how projection works, how to operate diverse projection apparatus – magic lanterns (also called sciopticons or stereopticons), dissolving views, epidiascopes and film projectors. It treats the operation of diverse light sources, the manufacture of slides for projection including several possibilities for adding color. In another part, it explains how to use a magic lantern and projected images in a lantern performance to demonstrate physical, chemical and optical experiments as well as explain special effects achieved by animated slides. Bei der Bereitung von Sauerstoff ist es durchaus nötig, die Retorte so einzurichten, daß im Falle einer Verstopfung der Röhren keine Explosion stattfinden kann. Eine ganz gefahrlos arbeitende Retorte, die mit einem Gasometer in Kombination steht, sei im folgenden beschrieben. Diese besteht, wie aus der Zeichnung ersichtlich, aus zwei Stücken, nämlich einer ebenen Platte A und einem Deckel B, in dessen oberem Teile eine Öff- nung mit dem Ableitungsrohr für das Gas enthalten ist. Beide Fig. 32. Sauerstoff-Generator im Durchschnitt Teile bestehen aus Eisen: sie sind gasdicht aufeinander ge- schliffen und können, falls dies nötig werden sollte, mit ge- ringen Kosten ersetzt werden. Der Deckel B wird durch zwei Spiralfedern niedergehalten, die einem Gewicht von etwa 3 Kilogramm entsprechen, das macht eine Beschwerung von 60 Gramm auf das Quadratzenti- meter, während man sonst meistens nur 15 Gramm im Durch- schnitt pro Quadratzentimeter nimmt. Deshalb ist das gewählte Übergewicht reichlich genügend.
