Le lieutenant rentre au quartier et se souvenant de l'ordre reçu, dit à Isidore Bidonot de raccourcir ses pantalons. Isidore est surpris mais il obéit. Peu après le sergent l'appelle et lui renouvelle le même ordre. Il proteste inutilement et doit couper ses pantalons à nouveau. Plus tard1, le capitaine lui ordonne brusquement de raccourcir ses pantalons et sous menace d'être consigné, il doit encore obéir. A la revue, le pauvre Isidore se présente avec des pantalons qui lui arrivent au-dessus du genou.
