Who's Who on the Screen RICHARD A. ROWLAND Richard A. Rowland, president of Metro Pictures Corporation, had his intro- duction to things theatrical as a twelve-year old boy when he handled the calcium lights for his father who directed the destinies of a Pittsburgh theatre which was playing "Uncle Tom's Cabin." From that time to this, when he sponsors the efful- gence of a constellation of celluloid luminaries, Mr. Rowland has been either the man in front or the man behind numerous stars. At the age of eighteen Mr. Rowland entered into a partnership with another Pittsburgher and in a small way they opened a system of exchanges, besides laying the foundation for the chain of motion picture theatres in the Pittsburgh district, they now control.. Mr. Rowland has been pres- ident of Metro since that corporation was organized. 385
