REOPENS OZARK THEATER Webster Groves, Mo. — The Ozark has reopened after being dark for four months. The St. Louis Amusement Company, which had been operating the house, discontinued shows when the town decided against Sunday performances. It was contended the house could not operate profitably without Sunday business. Leading business men of the community have formed a new corporate to operate the house, and have subleased it from the Skouras interests. J. A. Siepken is manager of the house. No shows will be given on Sundays. New Sound Apparatus Developed in Russia Washington Bureau of THE FILM DAILY Washington — Another method of recording and reproducing sound, has been developed by Messrs. Mashkovitch and Okhotnikov, employed by White Russia Film Co., advises a report to the M. P. Division of the Dept. of Commerce. In the new system, it is claimed, no light is required to make a record, the light being replaced by electricity, thus making it possible to make records of any speed without the danger of overlapping vibrations. ZANFT DINNER ATTENDED BY MANY FOX OFFICIALS Beefsteak dinner tendered Major John Zanft, head of the Fox Theater Corp., at Dinty Moore's was attended by many executives of the company. The entertainment was headed by Harry Rose, who acted as master of ceremonies, and introduced Emil Boreo, Ruth Royce, Horace Heidt and the Fox Jazzmanians. Among those in attendance were: Wrilliam Fox, Charles S. Levin, Aron Fox, James R. Grainger, Will Morris, M. Warendorf, B. Warendorf, Jack Loeb, Saul Rogers, Alderman John O'Connell and others. Independent Pictures Gets Chaplin Essanay Films Cleveland — Independent Pictures has secured for distribution throughout Ohio and Kentucky a series of one and two reel Essanay Chaplin comedies. New prints and accessories are available on the subjects. J. H. Beck is manager of the company's local office. Mary Garden to Appear in Talking Picture Opera Mary Garden, star of the Chicago Civic Opera, has plans to appear in a talking picture opera being prepared by Hamilton Forrest. It will be set in ancient Egypt. R. H. Cochrane's Daughter Becomes Bride on Dec. 7 Miss Betty Cochrane, daughter of R. H. Cochrane, vice president of Universal, will become the wife of John Howard Laeri on Dec. 7. The marriage will be held at her parents' home in New Rochelle, N. Y. Miss Cochrane was graduated from Smith College last June. Mr. Laeri, who comes from Youngstown, O., attended Williams. Pathe Gets Shots of "Lifer" Lincoln, Neb. — A sound newsreel camera was permitted for the first time within the gates of the state penitentiary here when Pathe made shots of Frank Connell, a lifer doing his 14th year for bank robbery and murder, the convict having won first prize in a story writing contest on the history of Nebraska. Yesterday's matinee was attended by principals and chorus of Earl Carroll's "Sketch Book." House Manager for Mayor Pembroke, Ontario — J. H. Bruck, manager of the chain of Allen theaters in the Ottawa Valley announced his intentions to run for the mayor of this city for 1930. Bruck has been a member of the city council for the past two years. Standard Gets Audible Films Cleveland — Jess Fishman, general manager of Standard Film Service, has secured the distribution rights for Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, West Vriginia and western Pennsylvania on the eight all talker features being produced by Audible Pictures. Raoul Walsh in New York Raoul Walsh, Fox director, arrived in New York yesterday and is scheduled to sail for Europe tonight aboard the Bremen. Sound for Two W. Va. Houses Wellsburg, W. Va.— N. G. Anas, owner of the Strand and Palace here has installed sound equipment in both houses. Theater Owner Dies Hillsboro, 111. — Edward Fellis, owner of the Orpheum here and well known in southern Illinois picture circles, died recently at St. Louis. He had been ill for a long time and had undergone 22 operations. Littell With Detroit Film Board Detroit — Miss Audrey C. Littell of Chicago, has succeeded Mrs. Marion Hull as secretary of the local Film Board. Calvin Bard Gets Des Moines Office Des Moines — Calvin Bard, formerly manager of the Iowa, Cedar Rapids, has been appointed manager of the World Wide Exchange here, succeeding Lew Phillips.
