Biz 10 Per Cent Ahead of 1934 Canadian theater business is approximately 10 per cent improved over a year ago, according to reports reaching Oscar R. Hanson, who is in New York from Toronto. Hanson, former Tiffany general sales manager and now associated with Empire in the Dominion as well as exhibition activities, said that Canadian audiences are showing a greater preference for British-made pictures than ever before. "Crime" Fights "Crime" Lincoln, Neb. — Competition of the fierce sort is under way here this week, with L. L. Dent's Varsity Theater playing Columbia's "Crime and Punishment," while J. H. Cooper's Orpheum is plugging the French "Crime and Punishment" at the same time. Herman Weinberg Resigns Baltimore — Herman G. Weinberg, managing director of the Little theater for the past six years, has announced his resignation, effective Jan. 1. Leichter Closes Deals On Latest Tearle Film Mitchell Leichter, president of Beaumont Pictures at present Jn New York from the coast, to date has closed deals with independent exchanges in Denver, Dallas, Atlanta and New York on his "Desert Guns", latest in his series of features starring Conway Tearle. Leichter also has disposed of the foreign rights, and is now completing additional sales. Tearle's supporting cast in this picture is headed by Margaret Morris, formerly featured in RKO, Paramount and other major studio productions. Sam Bischoff Producing 12 On Current Warner Lineup As a producer for Warner-First National, Sam Bischoff is scheduled to, make 12 features this season, the executive said following his arrival in New York yesterday by boat from the Coast. Upon his return to Hollywood in two weeks Bischoff will do "Three Men on a Horse," "Slim," based on a novel, pictures starring James Melton and Rudy Vallee, and "Charge of the Light Brigade," which is planned as a special. "Frisco Kid," starring James Cagney and which Bischoff made, is now the attraction at the New York Strand. Reliance to Produce 6 or 8 Next Season Although the company has not as yet set a new releasing deal, Reliance is planning to produce between six and eight features for the 1936-37 season, it was stated yesterday following return of Harry Goetz to New York from the Coast. The firm's present schedule calls for four pictures. Listed for 1936-37 are: "Beau Brummel," "Mark of Zorro," "Mother Carey's Chickens," "Gungha Din" and a picture based on the life of Jim Fiske, Wall Street operator. Reliance is now working on "Last of the Mohicans," final picture under its current United Artists distribution arrangement. Cowdin to Finish Survey Within About Four Weeks Examination of Universal's setup by representatives of Standard Capital Co., which holds a three-month option on the company, will be completed within four weeks, it was stated yesterday by J, Cheever Cowdin, president of the finance firm. Cowdin said that his company has arranged the financing necessary to swing the deal, in event it decides to exercise its option, which expires the first of February. Charles R. Rogers, who is representing Standard Capital in connection with $750,000 it has loaned to Universal and which is secured by negatives of a number of productions now in work, arrived in New York yesterday from Hollywood. RKO Gets "Winterset" "Winterset," Maxwell Anderson drama which is a current Broadway success, has been purchased for filming by RKO Radio Picture. Burgess Meredith, who plays the leading $ male role, has been signed by the same company. "PETER IBBETSON, " at the DENHAM THEATRE— DENVER, grossed 34% over the house average . ******* .
