T T T Gregory Ratoff has been assigned an important role in "Under Two Flags," the cast of which is headed by Ronald Colman. Frank Lloyd will direct, with production slated to start Dec. 26th. The picture will be made by 20th Century-Fox. T T T Republic plans to aug?ment its present contract lists by the addition of eight or ten new players who are to be groomed for star and feature roles, according to Albert E. Levoy, general production manager. Present Republic contract players include Evelyn Venable, John Wayne, Gene Autry, Ann Rutherford, Barbara Pepper and Smiley Burnette, while the studio has an optional seven year contract with Jean Rouverol. Levoy has appointed Jules Schermer, present assistant to Nat Levine, to take charge of the talent search. Mordaunt Shairp, young playwright, author and scenarist, who was one of the co-adapters of "The Dark Angel," has been signed by Walter Wanger to do the screen adaptation of Emily Bronte's novel, "Wuthering Heights." ▼ t ▼ Helen Flint of the New York stage has been engaged for "Little Lord Fauntleroy," forthcoming Selznick International production for U. A. Ben Lyon and Edward Nugent will play the leading roles in "Dancing Feet," Republic production of the Rob Eden novel, which Joseph Santley will direct. Joan Marsh has the leading feminine role. "The Petrified Forest," starring Leslie Howard and Bette Davis in a film version of the successful stage play by Robert E. Sherwood, has been completed at the Warner-First National West Coast studios. Miss Davis will go at once into the cast of "The Man With the Black Hat," opposite Warren William. Also in the latter cast are Marie Wilson, Alison Skipworth, Arthur Treacher, Porter Hall and other players. Dashiell Hammett wrote the original story, which has been adapted for the screen by Brown Holmes. William Dieterle is directing. T T T Lucien Prival and Joseph Boyd have been added to the cast of "Darkest Africa," Republic serial starring Clyde Beatty. T T T Over 30 per cent of the extras used in the Armistice Day scenes of "Three Live Ghosts," which H. Bruce Humberstone is directing for M-G-M, actually participated in similar scenes on that memorable Nov. 1 1 in almost every part of the world. T T T Sam Wood, who recently directed "VVhipsaw" for M-G-M, was an expert gymnastic tumbler and amateur boxer during his enlistment in Uncle Sam's Navy. Recently he tripped over an electric cable at the studio and dislocated his hip and threw out his vertebra. T T T Local critics recently singled out for praise Howard J. Green's screen version of "If You Could Only Cook," which Everett Riskin produced for Columbia. Green recently signed a long term contract with this organization as both writer and producer. T T T Although Isabel Jewell could now satisfy her yearning to see her name as the star in a Broadway stage presentation, her recent performance ipposite Ronald Colman in "A Tale )f Two Cities," precludes her getin«' away from Hollywood for at least a year, it is claimed. t ▼ T Columbia has started work on a new untitled two-reel comedy featuring Monte Collins which is being directed by Del Lord. The story and screen play are by Preston Black. Ruth Skinner, Mary Foy, Louise Carver, Vernon Dent, Jack Kenny and Tommy Bond are seen in roles. 1936 Cinema Buyers' Guide Out London — The Cinema Buyers' Guide for 1936, issued by the Cinema Press, is off the press. The volume is full of information about things cinematic in Great Britain, valuable to American as well as British producers and distributors. It contains a directory of London and provincial renting organizations, studios and theaters, and a buyers' guide listing firms dealing in all kinds of equipment. Advance Campaign for "Blood" A special exploitation campaign will be placed under way in a few days by Warners for the premiere of "Captain Blood," scheduled for Christmas week at the New York Strand. A national tieup already has been effected with "Screen Romances." DuWorld Gets Cinecolor Series DuWorld has acquired distribution rights outside the United States to the series of six one-reelers on science subjects from "Popular Science Monthly" produced in Cinecolor by Jerry Fairbanks. New Deal Closed on "Custer" "Custer's Last Stand", Weiss serial with a feature version, will be distributed in the Chicago and Milwaukee territories by Henri Ellman of Capitol Film Exchange. Join Film Alliance Board Henry Hart, book editor for Putnam's; Langston Hughes, poet and author, and Andre Roosevelt, explorer, have joined the advisory board of the New Film Alliance. Stage Attractions in Ft. Worth Ft. Worth, Tex.— For the first time two stage attractions were playing at local Interstate Theaters over past week-end. Ina Ray Hutton's girl band and stage show played four-day engagement at the Worth Theater here, while Earl Carroll's "Vanities" gave two performances at the Majestic Theater. "Hostess" at Strand Saturday "Broadway Hostess," Warner release with Winifred Shaw, Lyle Talbot, Allen Jenkins, Phil Regan and Genevieve Tobin, opens Saturday morning at the New York Strand. "Captain Blood" comes into the house on Christmas Day. Close More Circuit Deals Associated Theaters, Toronto, the Hirsch Circuit of Philadelphia, and the Harris Amusement Co. circuit in the Pittsburgh region are the latest to be signed by Republic for the playing of its 1935-36 lineup.
