T T T Alan Hale has gone to London to play second lead to Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., in the Criterion production, "High Treason," for release through United Artists. Tay Garnett will direct. T T T Casting items at M-G-M include selection of Allan Jones for the chief role opposite Jeanette MacDonald in "The Firefly," and addition of James Stewart to the cast now being assembled for "After the Thin Man." Jones has an important role to complete in the new Marx Brothers picture, "A Day at the Races," before the new picture gets under way. T T ▼ Monte Blue and "Fuzzy" Knight have been signed by Edward Finney for "Song of the Gringo", the first of eight Westerns to be produced for Grand National. Tex Ritter, singing cowboy of the radio, will be starred and Jean Woodbury is the leading woman in the first feature. John P. McCarthy will direct with Lindsley Parsons supervising. T T T Universal has signed Ernest Cossart and Mischa Auer to term contracts. T t ▼ Charles Winninger of "Show Boat" has been cast in another Universal picture, "Top of the Town." T ▼ ▼ Sid Silvers, who acted as coauthor and also one of the chief comedians of "Broadway Melody of 1936," and who will perform in similar capacities for the new "Broadway Melody," has been signed to a Ions-term contract by M-G-M. Roger Imhof has been signed for one of the principal roles in the Columbia picture, "North of Nome," having just finished in Grand National's "In His Steps." Booked for Broadcasts Radio appearances of the Marx Brothers, and of Allan Jones, young tenor who will appear with them in their new comedy, "A Day at the Races," are announced by M-G-M. The Marx Brothers will be heard on the Camel Caravan program Sept. 2. Jones is scheduled to appear on the Packard Motor Car program Sept. 8. Six Grand Nat'l Releases in the Cutting Rooms Grand Nitional has six releases now in the cutting rooms receiving final editing. Ber.nie F. Zeidman is finishing "In His Steps," with Cecelia Parker and Eric Linden, and has completed "White Legion," with Ian Keith and Tala Birell. George A. Hirliman has completed negative cutting and scoring on his first four features for Grand National: "Yellow Cargo," with Conrad Nagel and Eleanor Hunt, and three Hirlacolor pictures, "The Devil on Horseback," "Captain Calamity" and "We're in the Legion Now." Douglas MacLean is getting settled in his new offices at RKO Pathe studios, preparatory to starting production on "23 Vi Hours Leave." T ▼ T Abe Meyer is selecting the music for the George O'Brien starring vehicle, "Daniel Boone." T T V James Burke has been signed for "Glory" at 20th Century-Fox. He has just completed a role in "Can This Be Dixie?" which George Marshall is directing. T T T Republic Pictures signed Yakima Canutt for a role in "Ghost Town Gold," the second western in the "Three Mesquiteers" series, with Joe Kane directing. Bob Livingston, Ray Corrigan and Max Terhune have the leading roles. William Newell, Republic contract comedian, was assigned a comedy role in "Robinson Crusoe of Clipper Island," action serial featuring Mala. ▼ ▼ » "Tonight's the Night" has been selected as the working title of the new Stan Laurel-Oliver Hardy feature-length comedy now in production at the Hal Roach studios under direction of James Home. The supporting cast includes Lyda Roberti, James Finlavson, Rosina Lawrence, Jacqueline Wells and Sharon Lynn. The same studio announces that "Nobody's Baby," a musical feature nicture. starring Patsy Kelly and Lyda Roberti, will start production Sept. 21. Gus Meins will direct, and Rosina Lawrence will have an important role. T T T A directing-writing-acting contract has been signed by Hal Roach with Tom Dugan, who is featured in "Mister Cinderella," Jack Haley feature soon to be released. ▼ T T Carlo Roncoroni, president of Cines, leading Italian film corporation, was introduced to the local nress at a cocktail party given by Walter Wanger. Roncoroni is visiting Hollywood to study American production methods and to interest American producers in making pictures, especially those requiring an Italian background, at the new studios now under construction in Rome. Wanger plans to do some producing there next spring. T T T Harry Hammond Beall and Mark Larkin, handling publicity for "Everyman." presented to the press the cast, director, art director and dance director of this spectacle which will be staged at the Hollywood Bowl this month as the climax of its musical season. Occasion was a luncheon at an improvised sidewalk cafe in the Chaplin Studios. T T T Evelyn Venable has been engaged by Columbia for the feminine lead in Jack Holt's next picture, "North of Nome." T T T George Brent and Josephine Hutchinson will appear together in Warner's "Mountain Justice." Guy Kibbee and Robert Barrat will have important roles. T T T Due to a slight change in production schedule, Rosalind Keith will replace Marian Marsh in Columbia's "Theodora Goes Wild," starring Irene Dunne, with Melvyn Douglas as her leading man. T T ▼ Arnold Belgard has been signed by Walter Wanger to adapt the Allene Corliss novel, "Summer Lightning," for the next Joan Bennett vehicle for United Artists release. The screen version will be known as "All Ladies Are Women." Y ▼ » Paramount has set "You and Me" as a working title to replace "Wonderful." soon to enter production with George Raft starred and Norman Krasna directing. Arline Judge will have the feminine lead. ▼ ▼ ▼ Charlotte Winters has joined the cast of "No Hard Feelings", now in production at First National. Glenda Farrell and Barton MacLane have the two leading roles, with Frank MeDonald diverting. Other principals are Winifred Shaw, Craig Reynolds and Jane Wyman. T T T Richard Boleslawski. now directs ing "Theodora Goes Wild." a Columbia production for which he was loaned by Metro, leaves in the next two months by plane to make connections with the Graf Zeppelin for Germany, thence by plane to Warsaw, Poland, his nativitv. A warm welcome awaits the rotund Polish director on his arrival, as plans have been made by the former officers of the regiment with whom he served during the war to greet him with pomp and ceremony. Boleslawski will spend two days in Warsaw conferring with Government executives on the filming of a picture bnsed on the life of General Kosciusko. Then he will return to Hollywood by the same process used in going. By his work in support of Marion Davies and Clark Gable in "Cain and Mabel", David Carlyle has won two featured roles in new Warner pictures. He will nlay in "No Hard Feelings" with Glenda Farrell and Barton MacLane. and also in "Once i Doctor" with Donald Woods and Jean Muir. A truce has been declared between Sam Wood and the trio of Marx Brothers he is preparing to direct in "A Day at the Races." However, this agreement will only be in force during the period of rehearsals. The Marx Brothers are well known for the pranks they play on those who are associated with them in the making of their pictures. Not until they bumped up against the Celtic Wood, who directed them in "A Night at the Opera," did they meet their Waterloo. Perpetrated in a spirit of fun. Wood encouraged the screen's mirth-provokers to continue their pranks, as it was reflected in their work before the camera with excellent results. T T T Although pleasure bent during his recent visit east, Wesley Ruggles, Paramount producer-director, took time off to watch a performance of a group of stock players in Springeld. Mass. and unearthed a new juvenile actor in the person of Delbert Horsely, a member of the troupe. So impressed was Ruggles with the "oung actor's ability that he signed him to a personal contract to take effect on completion of his present engagement. t r T For meritorious service and conscientious effort rendered in behalf of George O'Brien during the past three years, Georgie Sherman, youthful assistant director, has been rewarded with a term contract by the George Hirliman company on recommendation of the HirlimanRKO star. According to O'Brien, now being starred in "Daniel Boone" under David Howard's direction, Sherman's ability will shortly be further recognized by promotion to a director's status. Deferring to the request of Harry Cohn of Columbia, Cecil B. DeMille, Paramount producer-director, has agreed to rearrange his filming xhedule in order to enable John Miljan to accept the proferred featured character role in "North of Nome", starring Jack Holt under William Nigh's direction. For the past several weeks Miljan has been appearing in "The Plainsman". BaxterFrancis Teamed Warner Baxter, borrowed from 20 h Century-Fox, and Kay Francis wi!l be teamed by First National in a production scheduled to start soon.
