We have come to the conclusion that the modern theater architect must re-enter school and study mechanical reproduction of sound and brush up on his theory or theories, of sound waves, sound reverberation and sound absorption. There are always new problems before us. Sound is one. This specific question does not only cover the construction of theaters with large seating capacities or theaters with friendly and intimate interiors. It also embraces, and more particularly so, the theater designed to corral, carry, curve and transmit sound electro-mechanically or photo-chemically recorded. Only a thorough knowledge and actual experience with sound recording and synchronization will give the designer the amount of practical knowledge that will cause him to make such modifications and adopt such construction methods and such building materials that will assure the owner perfect acoustical properties in an auditorium which must absorb and carry to all parts of the different tiers in that auditorium the dynamic waves and intensities of reproduced sound. All this must be accomplished and achieved within the boundaries of a fair, equitable and practical building cost. We live in an age of chain operation.
