INTECDUCTICN BY THE PUBLISHER OF THE FILM DAILY THIS is the twelfth annual edition of THE FILM DAILY YEAR BOOK. This volume is now universally recognized by the motion picture industry of the world as its standard reference, statistical and informative guide. Without the efficient and enthusiastic co-operation of every branch of this great industry, as well as the U. S. Department of Commerce, the completeness and comprehensiveness of the following eleven hundred pages would be impossible. LET us, for a minute, view 1929 in retrospect. It was a period of what will go down in history as the greatest era of expansion the industry has ever known. It was the year that finally and definitely established the death knell of the silent picture and ushered in sound and the talkers. It introduced the universal use of color in production and formally presented the first suggestion of Wide Film. Interesting is the observation that 1929 marked the opening of the first exclusive NewsReel Theater. THE motion picture industry enters 1930 in the most prosperous condition in its comparatively short but eventful history. The year just passed has proven, from a financial as well as artistic standpoint, a most compelling one. Color in production is here to stay. Wide Film \sill soon make its bid for universal use. W ith the experimentation and novelty stage of the talkers behind us we can now look forward with confidence to bigger and better things from the production work shops. D ECEMBER saw the third FILM DAILY RELIEF FUND DRIVE. The response to this appeal was as usual instant, sincere and generous. If compelling proof were necessary the past two years have effectively demonstrated the need of this fund and committee to administer it in the interest of distressed film folk in and around New York City. T HIS 1930 edition of THE FILM DAILY YEAR BOOK is a \olume of, for and by the motion picture industry. To tliose, from every department and branch of pictures and from every part of the world who have generousl) given their time and assistance in the compiling of statistics and information for the following pages, the Film Daily is indeed most appreciateand grateful. m.
