a restriction on the import of lower cost pictures. Article 10 of the Law of July 26, 1949 was implemented on August 26, 1950, when a 42 per cent ceiling was placed on the distributors share of receipts. Under certain conditions, and at the discretion of Government authorities, this ceiling may be raised. The regulation applies to foreign as well as national productions. THEATERS-At the end of 1949 there were 11,140 motion picture theaters in Italy. This figure includes small halls attached to local churches in rural areas. During 1950, 1,490 permits were granted for new theaters, making a total of 12,630 in operation or under construction. Estimatetl gross receipts for 1950 were 58,000,000,000 lire. The official rate of exchange is 625 lire to the U. S. dollar. T.^XES— A graduated entertainment tax and a fixed sales tax aggregate approximately 30 per cent of gross receipts. However, the full 30 per cent weighs only on foreign films, since the Government grants premiums corresponding to 15 per cent of gro'S receipts of each film to Italian producers. NATIONAL PRODUCTION-96 features and approximately 100 shorts were produced in Italy during 1950. The average unit cost of the former was 80,000,000 lire and li/^ million lire for the latter. The following twelve features were considered outstanding by local critics: "Vulcano," "Domenica d'Agosto," 'Trimavera," "Non c'e' pace tra gli ulivi," "Stromboli," "Bellezza del diavolo," "Domani e' troppo tardi," "E' piu' facile d'un cammello," "Prima communione," ' Francesco, giuUare di Dio," "Cammino della ?peranza," "Donne e briganti." FOREIGN PRODUCTION-MG.\I finished "Quo \'adis" in November, 1950. This Technicolor production of monumental production was financed in part with 2 billion lire from local blocked funds. The entire production facilities of Rome's Cinecitta" were leased for a six-month period. Much additional material was brought over from .\merica. .\IGM also produced "Theresa" in Italy, while 20th Century-Fox did "The Medium" and Paramount "September .Affair" there. Jointly produced by American and Italian capital and personnel were "The Thief of Venice" and "The Dark Road." FOREIGN RELEASES-While official sUtistics have not been made public, it is estimated (and unofficially confirmed in Government circles) that well over 500 foreign films were released in Italy during 1950. Of these at least 400 were produced in the United States. FOREIGN RELATIONS-During 1950 the Italian motion picture industry, through its Government representatives, has concluded accords for the exchange and production of films with England, France, Spain and Germany. During the early part of 1951 a mission of Italian government film officials is expected to visit the United States for the purpose of making an agreement with the American industry.
