It is reliably reported that Producer-director Kardar, Producer-director Mehboob, Producer-director Nazir (of Suvarnalata fame) and Film-actress Khurshid (of Lala Yaqub association) have purchased extensive property in Karachi in addition to residential bungalows, which they are reported to have got very cheap. Pakistan has made these people zamindars. BAITING COMMUNISTS ! Hollywood, Dec. 3. Over 20 leading film executives and producers have announced their decision "to discharge or suspend without compensation" certain employees unless they are acquitted or purged themselves of contempt of the Congress and declare under oath that they are not Communists. Writers Dalton Trumbo and Lester Cole employees of M. G. M. have been dismissed by their studio. Three others dismissed previously were Producer Adrian Scott and Director Edward Dmytrk both of R. K. O. and Writer Ring Larnder (.Tnr.) of 20th Century Fox. GODLESS RUSSIA? Hollywood, Dec. 4. Giving evidence before the UnAmerican Activities Committee in Hollywood, Leo MeCarey. director of 'The Bells of St. Mary's" and "Going My Way" was asked whether those pictures were popular in Russia. MeCarey replied: "We haven't received one rouble from there". The Chairman asked why, and MeCarey replied, "Because there was a character that was not popular". "Who, Bing Crosby?" asked the Chairman. "No, God", replied MeCarey. CINEMA OPERATORS Madras, Nov. 20. Government of Madras have directed the ex-Servieemen who have served as the first and second grade cinema operators and projectionists in the Army should be exempted from serving the apprenticeship for two years in cinema theatres under a licensed operator as a condition precedent before appearing for the cinema operators' examination. The ex-Servicemen have also been exempted for two years from payment of fees for the issue of cinema operators' licence. However they will not be exempted from paying Rs. 6| as the examination fees payable to the Board of Examiners. STUDENTS & SAIGAL Bombay, Dec. 3. As usual fans remembered Saigal longer tha.n those folks who made money out of him and forgot him completely. The St. Xavier's College Musical Club proposes to establish a "Saigal Memorial Trophy" to encourage music and musical talent in the inter-collegiate field.
