Indeed, the prologue — scenes accompained by narration of the birth of Christ — is of breath-taking, overwhelminp beauty. Immediately after begins a story which, although it is nearly four hours long, rarely drags and never lets you down as far as emotional excitement, suspense or climax are concerned. Ben Hur (Charlton Heston), scion of a rich Jewish family of Judea, welcomes the new Roman Tribune to his city. The Tribune, Messala (Stephen Boyd), is his boyhood friend and Heston hopes that the tyrannical hand of Rome will soften under his rule. But Boyd believes that Caesar is divine; Heston believes with the Jews that there is only one God. Conflict between these former friends is inevitable. Although this is the story of Heston's conversion to Christianity, it is, on the surface, an adventure story packed with action. Boyd, to teach other Jews submit, condemns Heston to a galley and throws his mother (Martha Scott) and sistei (Kathy O'Donnell) into a dungeon. Incredibly, it seems, Heston survives three years or the galley. Then during a sea battle he rescue Commander Jack Hawkins who takes him to Rome and a new life of splendor. Filled with hatred for Boyd and lust for revenge, Heston can't rest. Returning to Judea he meets his enemy in the arena where they both enteS the chariot race. It is a brutal, highly exciting event. Afterward Heston is still unsatisfied; he has yet to discover the whereabouts of hig mother and sister.
