June 3 0, 1928 2197 Key City Reports {Continued from Page 2194) Newsreel Resume The Embassy theatre did only a fair business with "The Lion and The Mouse" and less than contemplated, even though the picture is considered a popular one. The Coliseum theatre scored a knock-out with "The Smart Set" on the screen and exceptional acts on the stage. "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes," together with good music, crowded the Alexandria theatre in the evenings. "The Blue Danube did very well at the Haight theatre as did "Singed" at the Avenue theatre. Sterns List 11 Comedies for Mid-Summer Eleven two-reel comedies have been set by the Stern Brothers for mid-summer release. The Sterns' current schedule was hand-picked from the large number of Stern comedies completed and available, it is asserted. The releases carry through July and August and wind up the 1927-28 film season for the Stern product. Definite information concerning the release dates of Stern Brothers Comedies from September on will be announced later. In this connection, it is interesting to note that the Sterns have comedies already in hand for release as far ahead as next April. The Stern Brothers summer releases include two of "The Newly weds and Their Baby" Comedies, "The Newlyweds' False Alarm," and "The Newlyweds' Anniversary." The two Newlyweds' Comedies will be released July 3rd and August 2nd, respectively. Two of the "Let George Do It" comedies also are scheduled. The first will be "Big Game George," to be released July 18th. The second, "She's My Girl," will be released August 22nd. The schedule also includes two new Buster Brown Comedies, "Good Scout Buster," for release July 23rd, and "Busting Buster," for release August 15th. The "Mike and Tke" series is represented by "Cash Customers," for Julv 11th; "Broke Out," for August 1st; and "Husbands Won't Tell," for August 29th. Two of the "Keeping Up with the Joneses" also are scheduled. "Reel Life" will be released July 4th, and "McGinis vs. Jones," on August 8th. Christie Closes for Story Material; Frances Lee Cast A deal with Jean Arlette, French, author, for a group of stories to be adapted for the new series which the Christie studios are producing under the title of "The Confessions of a Chorus Girl" has been closed by Al Christie. The Christie writers, under the direction of Frank R. Conklin, are selecting the story ideas out of the Arlette material and adapting them for the series of two-reelers which will center mainly around the backstage life of a show girl. Frances Lee, who only two years ago was vaudeville dancing partner for Billy Dooley, has been promoted by the Christies and will be starred in the series in which Hilly Engle and Sid Smith will also appear. Kinograms Kinograms No. 5407 included scenes of Byrd 's ship getting ready for the pole dash ; G. 0. P. candidates ; governors of New York and New Jersey open Staten Island bridge; water polo; King's brother inspects yeomen of the guard ; French babies in auto race; German inventor's bike which climbs trees; the boat race on the Poughkeepsie. In No. 5408 were views of Miss Earhart in London; Johnny Farrell, the Democrats at Houston; Yale defeating Harvard crew; yachts race in British regatta; women try out for Olympics ; King of Norway visits Finland; Los Angeles dancers hold pageant without music. Fox In Fox News Vol. 9 No. 77 the most important scenes dealt with the Coolidges at their summer home in Wisconsin, a Japanese naval day celebration in honor of Russia's defeat, and Members of the Department of Commerce staff hailing Herbert Hoover. The other items listed included : a rose tiesta at Italian village, exbaseball star training his 5 daughters in athletics; wing-flapping plane in crash in test flight; clearing the snow in the Rockies; the opening of the racing season on eastern tracks. In No. 78 were views of the Calif, crew winning Hudson River contest; Republican nominees — Hoover and Curtis; Jap school boys in gym drill; farms in southwest menaced by floods; Spaniards observe ancient Holy fete at Toledo; Schubert Centenary opens in Vienna; new youngster who defeated Charles Paddock in sprinting; college girls raising money for school by digging for gold; repairing the top of the Wool worth Bldg. Pathe Pa the News No. 53 was made up of scenes concerning the world's largest sub; Hoover and Curtis; an unusual freight ship used in Germany; California oarsmen winning Poughkeepsie regatta; Japanese kite flying; aqua-planing. In No. 54 were views that included Miss Earhart in London; the Democrats at Houston; Indians celebrating Curtis' nomination. There were also scenes of Mary Pickford's bobbed curls; Roumanian peasantry honors Queen Marie; water baseball; Honolulu bids farewell to U. S. Fleet. W-G-M M-G-M News Vol. 1 No. 90 shows views of leading figures in the political spotlight; the Poughkeepsie rowing classic; blimp landing on top of department store. Also included were: scenes of ancient jap rites honoring mikado; hading golfers in the American open; girl skaters racing through Los Angeles; Perm Military Academy honoring Byrd; flood and tornado in Mo.; autos leap barriers in French contest; English boats in try out on the Thames. No. 91 shows the Democratic convention, also, besides views of .Mis-, Earhart in Lon don, Johnny Farrell, and the big U. S. submarine. Also seen were: soldiers learning anti-aircraft tactics; new German diving invention; pelican island in California; French baby autoists in race. Paramount Paramount News No. 95 had scenes of the U. S. Navy's largest submarine; army blimp lands on roof of department store; Calif. winning the Poughkeepsie regatta; Hoover and Curtis; auto-perambulators ; Byrd gets college degree ; the Hagenbeck animal park in Germany; Italian ace, who aided Nobile ; Amundsen, and others ; plane squadron in test flights over the Hawaiians ; the Democratic convention at Houston. No. 96 featured the opening of the Houston convention; the Southern Cross in Fiji; Miss Earhart in London, and Farrell winning the golf open. Other screen stories were Mary Pickford's bobbed hair; a Chinese sweepstakes; Thea Rasche; famous Holland hyacinth fields; the Saratoga; German fliers at home. International In International News Vol. 10 No. 50 were: scenes of motorcycles in uphill test; ceremonies in Sweden honoring flag; Hoover and Curtis; John Coolidge at Amherst; Spanish church fete; California winning at Poughkeepsie; Harvard and Yale in crew race; confetti war at Harvard; girl skaters in race through city streets; Rheims restored; blimp lands on store roof. No. 51 included shots of the Democrats at Houston, Miss Earhart in London and Johnny Farrell winning the open. Additional scenes were: girls trying out for the Olympics; Finns show their power to Danish king; a 300-year old tortoise; English yachtsmen racing on the Thames. Seven Subjects Are Pathe Shorts for July 8 Seven short subjects are listed by Pathe for release during the week of July S. They include "A Fair Affair," a Sport light ; "The Huntsman," Aesop cartoon; "The Tower of Death," sixth chapter of "The Yellow Cameo;" Pathe Review No. 28; Topics of the Day No. 2S; and Nos. 58 and 59 of the Pathe newsreel. The review presents: "Dove Fishers Seine the Sky," "The Streets of the Stars," "It Must Be the Weather*' and "Living Jewels Under the Spanish Main." Merritt Crawford to Title ••( Curiosities" Scries Merritt Crawford, well known publicist and former trade paper executive, who has recently edited and titled several feature releases tor different companies, will do the titling and editing of the Walter Fatter series of " Curiosities." 'Jfi one-reel subjects which FBO will release this season through an arrangement with Amedee J. Van Beuren.
