Description:
A New York-based daily trade paper published by Martin Quigley. The companion to Quigley's better known weekly publication, MOTION PICTURE HERALD, and a direct competitor to THE FILM DAILY, which was also published out of New York. Established in 1930, MOTION PICTURE DAILY enjoyed a circulation of roughly 5,000 readers most years of its four decades in print (a nearly identical circulation to THE FILM DAILY, but only one third of the readership of MOTION PICTURE HERALD, which reached a wider audience of exhibitors). In the 1930s, the MOTION PICTURE DAILY's editor, Maurice Kann, called on the movie industry to shift more production back to the East Coast. Any productions that filmed in New York received ample attention. New York City never regained its production lead over Hollywood, but the major studios used the Big Apple for their corporate and distribution headquarters. As a result, MOTION PICTURE DAILY tended to focus on economic and regulatory issues confronting the film industry. -- Eric Hoyt, 2014

He will point out that while motion picture and television engineers have, in some areas kept pace with the achievements of the whole field of engineering, in other areas it may have lagged. The world market, including Russia, is to be reviewed briefly. Cinematography This Morning Registration for the convention began yesterday. This morning will be devoted to a session on cinematography, during which seven papers are to be delivered. Following the luncheon today a business meeting is scheduled for 2 P.M., after which there will be a symposium on film steadiness. A session on sound recording and reproduction is scheduled for 8 P.M. tonight. Space Technology Tomorrow Tomorrow both morning and afternoon sessions will be devoted to space technology and image sensing. Presentation of awards will be held at 8:30 that night, with the guest speaker Edgar M. Cortright, chief, advanced technology program, National Aeronautics and Space Administration. He will give a general survey of all aspects of the national space program, including space sciences, satellite applications, manned space flight, and developmental and supporting activities. Equipment Papers Wednesday On Wednesday morning nine exhibitor companies will present equipment papers and demonstrate their new equipment starting at 9 A.M. Presentations will include the following: Arriflex Corp. of America: a synchronous sound recording system for Arriflex cameras; Bell & Howell Co.: a new 16mm motion-picture printer; Camera Mart, Inc.: Camart Add-a-unit extension plate for Moviola editing machines; other Camart products; Century Lighting, Inc.: Punch automatic instantaneous infinite preset lighting system; Florman & Babb, Inc.: F. & B. slide dissolve unit; Karl Heitz, Inc.: Kinoptik lenses and Camex 8, Robot and Alpha cameras; Prestoseal Mfg. Corp.: film, tape and paper splicing equipment; Rapid Film Technique, Inc.: problems of scratches on motion-picture film and their removal; Time Automated Mfg. Co.: 16mm color processor. Instituted at Last Convention The equipment papers and demonstrations session is a relatively new feature of SMPTE conventions. The first such session took place during the 85th semi-annual convention at Miami Beach last May and proved to be a highlight of the convention week.
