Listings will appear but once. nJUIp^^HH BROADWAY MELODY OF 1940 MCM Drama Not Set Selling Names: Fred Astaire, Eleanor Powell, George Murphjr. Director: Norman Taurog. Producer: Jack Cummings. Story Idea: Fred Astaire and George Murpliy are taxi-dancers and when a producer offers one of them a job, Astaire gives it to Murphy. Hired as leading man for Eleanor Powell, on opening night Murphy arrives at the theatre drunk and Astaire takes his place. Eleanor goes to Murphy and tells him of Astaire's loyalty; and things are straightened out when they plan a dance routine for three. Catchline: "He regretted his bargain when it meant losing the woman he loved." UA REBECCA Drama Not Set Selling Names: Laurence Olivier, Joan Fontaine, Judith Anderson. Director: Alfred Hitchcock. Producer: David O. Selznick, Story Idea: Laurence Olivier takes as his second wife, a simple girl, Joan Fontaine, whom he had met in Monte Carlo, where she was staying as the companion to a wealthy woman. Joan goes back to Olivier's home, where she is overwhelmed by the fact that she is mistress of such a grand estate. She quickly becomes aware of the mystery of Olivier's first wife, whose personality, although she is dead, is a constant menace. She clears up the mystery for the future happiness of Olivier and herself. Catchline: "A mj^stery that menaced their future happiness." MCM BAD LITTLE ANCEL Drama Oct. 27 Selling Names: Virginia Weidler, Ian Hunter, Lois Wilson, Henry Hull. -Director: William Thiele. Producer: Albert Levoy. Story Idea: Virginia Weidler runs away from an orphanage because of a command in the Bible "flee to Egypt," and buys a ticket to Egypt, New Jersey. There she meets and is adopted by Ian Hunter and his wife, Lois Wilson, and when Hunter loses his job Virginia pleads for him. She reads a passage from the Bible and this chastens his boss so much, that he agrees to give Hunter his job back and everything ends happily. Catchline: "A child's supreme faith brought them happiness." THAT'S RIGHT, YOUR WRONG RKO Comedy with Music Nov. 24 Selling Names: Kay Kyser, Adolphe Menjou, Lucille Ball, May Robson, Edward Everett Horton, Dennis O'Keefe. Producer-Director: David Butler. Story Idea: Kay Kyser of the "College Of Musical Knowledge" and his band are offered a picture contract. May Robson, Kyser's grandmother, goes along to look after them. At the studio, Kyser meets Lucille Ball, a glamour girl and Edward Everett Horton, a writer. Not happy, Kyser pretends to fall for the great lover "stuff and puts on a show, so that when his tests are shown he appears ludicrous. This causes the company to cancel the contract, much to Kyser's delight. Catchline* "Kay Kyser tries to become a great lover." Para. GUN CHORES Western Not Set Selling Names: William Boyd, Russell Hayden, jane Clayton, Britt Wood. Director: Howard Bretherton. Producer: Harry Sherman. Story Idea: Jane Clayton arrive in a small western town to take up residence on the ranch left her by her uncle. Enroute she is saved from an accident by William Boyd and Russell Hayden. The^^ accompany her to the ranch and then decide to remain in order to stop the rustling of her cattle. Catchline: "Hopalong's miraculous escape from a band of cattle rustlers." SECRET OF DR. KILDARE MCM Drama Not Set Selling Names: Lionel Barrymore, Helen Gilbert, Lew Ayres, Laraine Da.y. Director: Harold S. Bucquet. Story Idea: Lew Ayres pretends to desert Lionel Barrymore in his investigation of a new cure for pneumonia, because he knows that in doing so he will force Barrymore to take a much needed rest. Meanwhile Ayres restores Helen Gilbert's sigh, by discovering the cause of her apparent blindness. When he discovers that Barrymore had saved his father's life, they are reunited. Catchline: "He saved his mystery patient from a "quack." UA OF MICE AND MEN Drama Not Set Selling Names: Burgess Meredith, Betty Field, Lon Chaney, Jr. Producer-Director: Lewis Milestone. Story Idea: Burgess Meredith and Lon Chaney, Jr., a half-wit, have been moving from farm to farm because of (jhaney's obsession to smooth and pet small animals and not let go until he breaks their necks. They get a job on a farm where they meet Betty Field, a trollop. To atract Chaney's attention, Betty lets him smooth her hair and he breaks her neck. To save the halfwit from a prison cell, Meredith kills him. Catchline: "One of life's greatest tragedies." Striking Display on "Marshal" This lobby display on 20th-Fox's "Frontier Marshal," with a miniature town in the foreground replete even to the last gravestone, was not devised by Manager Dave Martin of the Paramount Theatre, Hollywood. No, siree. The credit goes to his able henchmen. Assistant James Garrity and Usher Carl Rciman. It created a lot of attention JUDGE HARDY AND SON MCM Drama Not Set Selling Names: Lewis Stone, Fay Holden, Mickey Rooney, Ann Rutherford, Maria Ouspenskaya. Director: George Seitz. Producer: Lou Ostrow. Story Idea: Mickey Rooney and his father Lewis Stone, comfort each other during the desperate illness of Fay Holden. After Fay recovers, Mickey agrees to assist Stone in finding the person Maria Ouspenskaya and Igor Brecher are shielding, when they are in need of help. He finds that Leona Maricle, a rich woman, is the daughter of Maria and Brecher and has been concealing the relationship because of their humble origin. The Hardys settle things once more. Catchline: "Andy Hardy learns how to give and take." 20th-Fox THE BLUE BIRD Drama Not Set Selling Names: Shirley Temple, Spring Byington, Johnny Russell, Jessie Ralph. Director: Walter Lang. Assoc. Producer: Gene Markey. Story Idea: Shirley Temple and her little brother, Johnny Russell, are two petulant children always complaining of their poverty. On Christmas night they have a dream in which the Good Fairy. Jessie Ralph, sends them in search of the Blue Bird. They have many adventures before they awaken Christmas morning completely changed and find the Blue Bird right in the surrouridings of their honi-e. Catchline: "The happiness we all seek is right in tlie palm of our hands." LITTLE OLD NEW YORK 20th-Fox Drama Not Set Selling Names: Alice Faye, Fred MacMurray, Richard Greene, Brenda Joyce. Director: Henry King. Assoc. Producer: Raymond Griffith. Story Idea: Richard Greene comes to New York from England to seek financial aid in the building of his invention, the first steamboat. He runs into Alice Faye, a barmaid and Fred MacMurray, a brawny builder of ships. They send him to Henry Stephenson, wealth}' shipbuilder, where he meets Brenda Joyce, Stephenson's niece. Because of her intervention he gets the money and success rules the day for the steamboat and romance. Catchline: "His invention changed the entire maritime world." A CALL ON THE PRESIDENT MCM Drama Not Set Selling Names: Ann Sothern, William Gargan, Walter Brennan, Lewis Stone. Director: Robert Sinclair. Producer: Edgar Selwyn. Story Idea: The President grants an audience to Mister Average Man, as he wants time to think over the European situation. He asks the President's help in clearing him of a felony charge: he was guilty of tearing up a letter to Ann Sothern, sent to her from her jailbird son, so that he could save her some heartache. The President promises his help, as by spending this time with him and listening to his story, he had helped the President with his decision. Catchline: "Mr. Average Man helps the President make a momentous decision."
