October 3. mZ SHOWMEN'S TRADE REVIEW 39 QUIET, PLEASE— MURDER (20th-Fox) Mystery. Principals: George Sanders, Gail Patrick, Richard Denning, Sidney Blackmer. Plot: A forger par excellence, kills the guard of a Manuscript Room of a Public Library and escapes with a priceless volume of "Hamlet." Six months later his gal friend double-crosses him and sells the fake copy to another crook. They are finally caught by a private detective who sees that they get the punishment they deserve, paying with their lives. Director, John Larkin. LAW OF THE NORTHWEST (Col.) Western. Principals: Charles Starrett, Shirley Patterson, Arthur Hunnicutt, Stanley Brown. Plot: Trouble starts in a Canadian town, that has been out of touch with civilization, when two elements quarrel over the building of a road. The trappers oppose the idea because they are afraid it will ruin the trapping business. The Royal Mounted Police finally take a hand and get the man behind all the trouble. Director, William Berke. TENTING TONIGHT ON THE OLD CAMP GROUND (Univ.) Western. Principals: Johnny Mack Brown, Tex Ritter, Fuzzy Knight, Jennifer Holt, Dennis Moore. Plot: A supposedly loyal worker of an Eastern Stagecoach Company hires a gang of desperadoes to stop the building of a new road, because he is in league with a rival company. When a killing occurs, a loyal young man rider is accused. The sister of the murdered man helps him prove his innocence. Director, Lewis D. Collins. VALLEY OF HUNTED MEN (Rep.) Western. Principals: Tom Tyler, Bob Steele, Jimmie Dodd, Edward Van Sloan, Ann Stewart. Plot: Three Nazis escape from a Canadian concentration camp into Montana, where they commit murder, steal horses and generally upset the district. The Three Mesquiteers head a posse, which eventually brings death to two. The third one gets to a ranch run by a refugee experimenting with a process for making rubber. Before he can sabotage the formula, the Three Mesquiteers expose him and carry him off to the guardhouse. Director, Jack English. FRIGHTENED STIFF (Col.) Mystery. Principals: Loretta Young, Brian Aherne, Don Costello, Jeff Donnell, William Wright, Richard Gaines, Sidney Toler. Plot: A youngcouple rent basement quarters in an old dingy apartment building in Greenwich Village, where they expect to write a novel about the Village. There they find something funny going on, but they decide to stay. A man is found murdered in a little garden behind their rooms and they are suspected. The unraveling of the crime involves the four other occupants of the building. Director, Richard Wallace. PASSING THE BUCK (Univ.) Comedy. Principals: Harry, Al and Jimmy Ritz, Jane Frazee, Robert Paige, June Clyde, Edmund Macd onald, Lou Lubin. Plot: Three Merrv Madcaps, stranded in a boom town in California when their show closes, are forced by the defense workers, to take the chef's place after he walked out because of their insults. Unable to cook, they become the waiters and the sister act from the show become the cooks. The success of the restaurant doesn't please two shady characters who run a crooked gambling house, so they make plans to start trouble.
