Plot: A young third officer embarks on his first sea voyage aboard a ship that carries a disturbing air of mystery. He makes friends with the Captain, who at sea is obsessed with one idea: authority. Arrived at port, he tries to have the Captain arrested for murder, but the balance of the crew help exonerate him. On the return trip, the young officer knows he's marked for death by the Captain, but his life is saved by another member of the crew whose suspicions had also been aroused. Director, Mark Robson. MARSHAL OF GUNSMOKE (Univ.) Western. Principals: Tex Ritter, Russell Hayden, Fuzzy Knight, Jennifer Holt, Herbert Rawlinson. Plot: The citizens of an unincorporated community are being intimidated by a gang of cut-throats who are preventing an election to vote a township charter. The town banker obtains a U. S. Marshal's appointment for Tex Ritter. But the head of the gang gets Ritter's brother involved in a murder, which makes the disgruntled promoters of law and order revoke Ritter's appointment. The two brothers eventually find a way to clear themselves and put the gang behind bars. Director, Vernon Keays. MILLION DOLLAR KID (Mono.) Comedy-Drama. Principals: Leo Gorcey, Huntz Hall, Gabriel Dell, Billy Benedict, Louise Currie, Noah Beery, Sr. Plot: The son of a millionaire becomes a member of a gang of hoodlums for the thrill he gets out of it. The East Side Kids, who have become acquainted with the father when they save him from some ruffians, try to help straighten the son out. It is only after they break the news of his twin brother's death in action, that the Kids are able to bring him around. Director, Wallace Fox. MOONLIGHT & CACTUS (Univ.) Comedy-With-Music. Principals: Andrews Sisters, Leo Carrillo, Elyse Knox, Tom Seidel, Mitchell Ayres & His Orchestra. Plot: A Petty Officer of the Merchant Marine returns, on leave, to his cattle ranch to find its management in the hands of girls due to the war. He also learns that large numbers of his cattle have been disappearing mysteriously, so he seeks the help of a neighboring rancher, who claims to be a detective. To his surprise he finds his cattle there, the neighbor having spirited them away for safe-keeping, because of his distrust of women. Director, Edward F. Cline. DOUGHBOYS IN IRELAND (Col.) Comedy-With-Music. Principals: Kenny Baker, Jeff Donnell, Lynn Merrick, Guy Bontham, Red Latham. Plot: A band leader spends every spare minute, after being inducted into the Army, in writing letters to the singer who promised to be his girl while he was away. In Ireland, after his basic training is completed, he meets a young colleen with whom he starts a feud. Forced to right the wrong because of the result on other soldiers, he makes friends and they eventually fall in love. It is after the singer shows up on a tour that he realizes that he and she were never in love with each other. Director, Lew Landers. ADV. Can^t Get It? Joe Hornstein Has It FALCON AND THE COEDS (RKO) Mystery. Principals: Tom Conway, Jean Brooks, George Givot, Isabel Jewell, Rita Corday, Barbara Brown. Plot: The Falcon is called to solve the murder of a popular instructor at a girls' seminary. There he discovers that the music teacher is hiding a manuscript of the dead man's poetry, a psychology professor is testing one of the girls for extra sensory perception, and a secret marriage. He catches up with the culprit, but not before the head of the institution is also killed. Director, William Clemens. SWEETHEARTS OF THE U. S. A. (Mono.) Comedy With Music. Principals: Una Merkel, Donald Novis, Cobina Wright, Sr., Henry King, Jan Garber and Phil Ohman and their Bands. Plot: A young worker in a defense plant helps a group of musicians who have been rejected by the Army, organize a 4F Band. They rehearse in an old haunted house, and when the owner finds them, talks her into turning the place over to them as a night club for the entertainment of the town's defense workers. Director, Lew Collins. DANCING MASTERS (20th-Fox) Comedy. Principals: Laurel & Hardy, Trudy Marshall, Robert Bailey, Matt Briggs, Margaret Dumont. Plot: Laurel & Hardy operate a dancing school. One of their paying customers is the daughter of a wealthy manufacturer, and she is in love with a poor boy of whom her parents disapprove. So Laurel & Hardy decide to help the youngsters: first, by interesting the girl's father in the boy's invention and then when that turns out tragically, by trying to raise a large sum of money themselves. Oliver ends up in a hospital bed, but everything works out all right otherwise. Director, Mai St. Clair. HIGHER AND HIGHER (RKO) Comedy-With-Music. Principals: Michele Morgan, Jack Haley, Frank Sinatra, Leon Errol, Marcy McGuire, Barbara Hale. Plot: The servants of a once rich tycoon, who haven't been paid for months, form a corporation. With the heirlooms and priceless liquor found in the basement, they decide to open the place as a Tavern. They also decide to get a wealthy husband for the kitchen slavey. After they find the man, he turns out to be a phoney, so they rely on the Tavern to put them all back in the chips again. Then the valet and the slavey find each other. Director, Tim Whelan. HEY, ROOKIE (Col.) Comedy. Principals: Ann Miller, Larry Parks, Joe Besser, Bob Haymes, The Vagabonds. Plot: A musical comedy producer is drafted into the Army and there he is immediately set upon to do a show for the boys. He tries to get the money to cover expenses, but is forced to use soldier talent. In between Army routines, rehearsals are held and the day the show goes on, the producer's girl-friend shows up, adding polish and lustre to the show with her dance routines. Director, Charles 'Barton. UNCERTAIN GLORY (WB) Drama. Principals: Errol Flynn, Paul Lukas, Jean Sullivan, Faye Emerson, Lucile Watson, Douglass Dumbrille. Plot: A Frenchman, about to pay with his life for a career of crime, escapes when British bombers raze the French prison yard where he was to be shot. Caught again by a man from the Surete he makes a strange deal. As long as he has to die, he will give himself up to the Germans as the saboteur who blew up a bridge . . . and thus save one hundred innocent hostages. Director, Raoul Walsh. ROOKIES IN BURMA (RKO) ComedyDrama. Principals: Wally Brown, Alan Carney, Erford Gage, Claire Carleton, Joan Barclay, Ted Hecht. Plot: The rookies go into action for the first time in Burma. They land in a Jap prison camp, when they try to be heroes, capture a Jap Jeep to escape in and then find themselves in a narrow mountain pass being shot at by both sides. They eventually make themselves known to their American comrades and come out okay. Director, Leslie Goodwins. THIRD GLORY (Univ.) Comedy. Principals: Donald O'Connor, Peggy Ryan, Helen Broderick, Helen Vinson, Ann Blyth, Minna Gombell. Plot: The young son of a Lt. Commander, home on leave, meets the daughter of a musical comedy star, whose mother was an old sweetheart of his fathers. Their plans to date are broken up by the exuberance of another young lady's affection. At a party given for the stars daughter, the son straightens out his affairs; the father straightens out his love life and all ends happily for all concerned. Director, Charles Lamont. HENRY ALDRICH, BOY SCOUT (Para.) Comedy-Drama. Principals: Jimmy Lydon, Charlie Smith, John Litel, Olive Blakeney, Darryl Hickman. Plot: Henry, now a senior patrol leader in the Boy Scouts, takes the young son of a former schoolmate of his father's into the Troop.
