Ray Castle, 54, who built the Oak Bay Theatre at Victoria and operated it for a long timt before leasing it to Odeon Circuit, died recently Mrs. Rogers, the wife of the owner of the Ashcroft, Ashcroft, B. C, died last week. PHILADELPHIA Shepard Bloom has replaced Jack Montgomery in the New Jersey territory for 20th-Fox. Bloom was formerly with the Cleveland branch. . . . Moe Verbin, formerly with Price Premium, is now with the Blumberg-Stiefel circuit, replacing Jack Blumberg, resigned. . . . Mort Magill is now district manager for the Motion Picture Sales Corporation in the PittsburghPhiladelphia territories and is looking for desk space in this area. . . . Harold Polin, former StanleyWarner head booker, left to become office manager of the Emerson Radio Company here. S-W ^lastbaum Manager Roy Robbins is recuperating after a major operation at the Jefferson Hospital. Allegheny Manager Chet Woerner is filling in at the Mastbaum. . . . Mrs. Bernice Landsberg, daughter of New Jersey Messenger's Meyer Adelman, is the mother of a six-pound, nine-ounce boy, making Adelman a grandfather for the fourth time. . . . The David Molivers celebrated their twelfth wedding anniversary last week. . . . George Trilling and Bernie Brooks, Fabian Theatres executives, renewed old acquaintanceships here last week. . . . MGM City Salesman' C. C. Pippin is reported doing nicely after his recent operation at the Frankford Hospital. Eddie Gabriel's Capitol exchange was robbed last week by thieves who forced an entry during the night. . . . Lou Rovner's Clearfield is closed for extensive alterations. . . . The Allied Motion Picture Buying and Booking Service is now booking for the Roosevelt and Strand, Swoyersville, Pa. KANSAS CITY ™ Fox Midwest will reopen the Orpheum here on Oct. 12, inaugurating the circuit's new plan of making the house available for legitimate attractions and for special films. First booking is "I Was a Male War Bride" with admission upped a dime to 75 cents. The house, closed since June, has been completely remodeled. Jimmy Nixon was named manager. RKO Manager Jim Lewis and his wife are vacationing in Hollywood. . . . MGM Central Division Sales Manager J. J. Maloney was here from Pittsburg huddling with Manager Al Adler, Loew Theatre District Manager Mike Cullen was here talking business to Manager Howard Burkhardt of the Midland. . . . The Columbia exchange is being redecorated; new on the Columbia staff are Student Booker Don Clark, Stenographer Geraldine Summers, Switchboard Operator Mrs. Betty Randolph and Mrs. Flora Davey, secretary to Ben Marcus. . . . Seen on film row: R. D. Strickler of Craig, Mo., and T. E. Courter of Gallatin, Mo. The L^niversity of Kansas City has organized a Film Club for the presentation of 'films regarded as "classics" and documentaries. Student membership fee is $2 a year. . . . Columbia OFF TO EUROPE. Sam Schwartz, RKO Theatres vice-president, and Mrs. Schwartz, are seen above on deck of the Queen Mary just before their departure last week for Europe, where they will visit England, France, Italy, Switzerland and Belgium. Manager Tom Baldwin, in kicking off the company's annual district managers' drive last week at the Bellerive Hotel, said the drive would be in honor of District Manager Ben Marcus and be named for him. . . . Bill Gable is Dickinson city manager in Topeka, Kan., and Paul Ellsbury has been moved to St. Joseph, Mo., to manage the St. Joe Theatre, from the Dickinson in Topeka. ALBANY Orville Eutermark resigned as Fox assistant booker. . . . Warner Manager Ray Smith returned to his desk after being ill , for several days. . . . The Albany Variety Club Tent No. 9 held it's annual clam-bake last week at Picard's Grove. . . . Paramount Assistant Booker Francis Lynch is on the sick list. Paul Wilson replaces Harold Kenyon as assistant cashier at Warners. The latter resigned to go with the Federal Government in Washington. . . . Helen Hart, secretary to MGM Manager Jack Goldberg is vacationing in New York. . . . Warners' Cashier Pat Wirth resigned to go with Eagle Lion in the same capacity to replace LaRose Fisher resigned. Hollow Brook Drive-In Theatre Corp. of New York City, has been incorporated. ... A fire of undetermined origin inflicted damages of $20,000 in the Strand, Watervliet, N. Y., on Sept. 24. The ceiling over the stage collapsed. MINNEAPOLIS RKO president Ned E. Depinet and Sam Shain, 20th-Fox director of public relations, have been added to the list of industry personnel who will attend the annual convention of Allied States here October 24-26. Announcement was made by Executive Director Stanley Kane of North Central Allied, which is sponsoring the convention. Other industry executives who have announced intention of appearing at the meet are William F. Rodgers, MGM sales vice-president, and A. W. Schwalberg. Paramount sales vice-president. Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Casey, native South Dakotans, new owners of the Garlock in Custer, S. D., have extensively remodeled the house. They recently moved with their family of three sons to Custer from Wyoming. Casey was formerly associated in Custer with a chain of theatres. National Screen Service Salesman Stu Murphy is recuperating following an emergency appendectomy. . . . Reno Wilk, coowner of Lippert Productions exchange (formerly Screen Guild), attended a weekend sales meeting in Chicago, accompanied by Salesman Frank Eisenberg and Booker Cy Libbey. . . . Don Swartz, owner of the Realart franchise, will attend the firm's annual convention at the Warwick Hotel, New York, Oct. 25-26. Minnesota Amusement Co., Paramount affiliate, stressed "before 1" prices in its Sunday advertising for leading loop theatres. SALT LAKE CITY Previous to the Sun Valley convention of the Pacific Coast Conference of Independent Theatre Owners, Oct. 15-17, Montana Independent Exhibitors will meet at the Finlen Hotel in Butte, Mont., on Oct. 12 to elect officers and PCCITO trustees. Rotus Harvey, PCCITO board chairman, will address the group on the recent public relations meeting in Chicago. Film Classics has moved into its new offices in the Cinema Arts Building. . . .
