Box-Office Slants All the King's Men {Continued jrom Page 25) Scant entertainment quality demand the best in showmanship. The film has almost unlimited exploitation possibilities not the least of which is the fact that it was adapted from a popular novel, and efforts in its behalf should be amply rewarded at the box-office. This looks like a sleeper. Cast: Broderick Crawford, John Derek, Joanne Dru, John Ireland, Mercedes McCambridge, Shepperd Strudwick, Ralph Dumke, Anne Seymour, Katherine Warren, Raymond Greenleaf. Credits: Directed by Robert Rossen. Written for the screen by Robert Rossen. Photography, Burnett GufTey. Based on the novel, "All the King's Men" by Robert Penn Warren. A Robert Rossen Production. Associate producer, Shirley Miller. Musical score, Louis Gruenberg. Musical direction, Morris Stoloflf. Plot: The courageous fight made by a farm-county politician against a crooked political machine attracts the attention of a newspaper reporter. When his paper refuses to print his articles in support of the fight, the reporter quits his job to join forces with the politician. Within a short time they have gained enough strength in rural districts to win the governship of the state. However, the politician's ambition grows with his success, until in his ruthless quest for power, he destroys his family, the reporter's family, and brings about his own assassination. Comment: "All the King's Men" is Americana with the strength of legend, although contemporary to this generation. It has been held fresh in general interest through the best selling novel of the same name. The popularity of the novel and the closeness with which the picture follows the life of Huey Long offers almost unlimited exploitation possibilities. High production values, and strong performances make the film look like a sleeper. Lack of marquee strength demands that the picture be sold, but it deserves the best in showmanship, and should pay an ample reward at the box-ofiice. Broderick Crawford's skillful character delineation of the man who almost succeeded in setting up a monarchy in one of America's 48 states during the last decade, is a notable performance. John Ireland does a commendable job as the reporter who, disillusioned and uncertain, puts his faith in Crawford. Joanne Dru is lovely and her performance is convincing, while Mercedes McCambridge is outstanding as the cynical young woman who deserts the machine to ride Crawford's political bandwagon to the top. Robert Rossen's direction takes full advantage of the meaty material with which he worked. VIEWS ON NEW SHORT SUBJECTS THE HUNTER (20th-Fox— 9802) Movietone Specialty. 8 mins. More effective photography by the Swedish Arne Sucksdorff, whose "Symphony of a City" and "Struggle for Survival" excited comment. Like the others, this one is unaccompanied by narration.
