Leighton Control of the Screen Prof. Emery S. Bogardus Future of the Photoplay William C. deMille It will be observed that the nature of this course is not technical and that it is meant only to create, or help create, a better understanding of the motion picture in its social aspects. The Academy, through its Boards of Judges, bestowed fifteen first awards on those deemed entitled to recognition for distinctive achievements in motion pictures in 1928. The nature and significance of this action, which it is intended to make a yearly event, will be better appreciated by considering the list of awards which are as follows : Emil Jannings, first award for his performances in ' ' The Way of All Flesh" and ''The Last Command." Janet Gaynor, first award for her performances in "Seventh Heaven," "Sunrise" and "The Street Angel." Frank Borzage, first award for directing the dramatic picture ' ' Seventh Heaven. ' '
