6 ■ UNIVERSAL WEEKLY ~~ = July 20, 1935 LET'S GET DOWN No. 822 Straight-from-the-Shoulder Talk by Carl Laemmle, President of the Universal Pictures Corporation Are you satisfied with the contracts you have made with any and all producers during the last few depression years. Oyer 8,000 exhibitors are satisfied with their deals with Universal. That's a lot of satisfied contractees. And, believe it or not, a huge number of these eight thousand have been on the books of the Universal for anywhere from ten to twenty-eight years consecutively! These exhibitors are not dumb. They are not completely sentimental. They would not follow Universal year after year for over a quarter of a century unless they made a decent profit by doing so. The truth is that in the long run Universal enables its customers to make more profit year after year than they can make anywhere else. They MIGHT stick to Universal through sentiment, but they can't get away from dollars and cents — and that means they can't get away from Universal. We make our full share of ordinary pictures, but so does every other producer. It is a part of the business. But we also make our full share of profit-producers and we have been doing this since some of you were in diapers.
