22 VARIETY HARRY DEAVES & CO DRAMATIC MANIKINS PRESEMT THEIR in an ORIB IN AL " COMEDY BURLESQUE on UNCLE TOM'S CAB We arc originators and producers, not Imitators. The possibilities of "Uoclfc Tom's Cabin" as a tabloid or comedy burlesque was never besrd of until we "hatched" out tbis act, Marcb 17, 1902. Now other "Incubators" are busy after we have shown them how. We originated (mark the word) "Rubber-neck" in atage box, smoking a cigarette, in March, 1808. and at the same time, la connection with the smoking figure, we Introduced our manager before the curtain. Consequently these two figures bare been in constant use for 11 years, belug the trade mark of our act, and being ours only. This does not seem to bother "pirates" snd "cosst defenders," who keep themselves to this snd other points belonging to us. Positively the first figure smoking in stage box was Introduced by me. Any one else dolag this has Imitated. Aa is alto the same with the Maulkln "Cake Walk," I being positively the one to produce it first on May 20, 1800, at Bergen Beach, Brooklyn. Every manikin act in the business now includes an imitation of the original, but none so good. Other points we have originated are electric lights around proscenium and over boxes in Jauuary, 1800, at Hurtlg A 8eamon's; "Teddy Roosevelt" In May, 1006, and electric baton lu orchestra. August, 1&08, at Bergen Beach. I give dates to prove my right to these ideas. them do so without permission. We are producers, also of our own original spect "Red Riding Hodd," "Clndoella." "Jack and the Bean Stalk." "Tramp Pirarea at 8eA,'*'etc. We have never imitated any one. We have too much material already. But we Intend to follow up "plratts" and "coast defenders." We hsve been too lenient heretofore. We have Just cloaed a successful tour of the Sulllvan-Consldine Circuit, wbete "Uncle Tom's Cable" was a big scream in every house. See what tbey thought of us in Denver: "Probably the greatest novelty presented in vaudeville la Denver for several years is the act of Heaves' manikins. These dolls have a theatre of their own, including orchestra, on the stags. A burlesque on "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is presented in a highly amusing fashion. It is really wonderful, the way the "manikins" act. A rowdy manikin In one of the boxes kept the audience In • root. The right -hand stage box was occupied by none other than Teddy Roosevelt and hia wife. At times the ex-president became noisy, much to the delight of the audience."—Denver Post,.April 4. (Continued from page 18.) partly modified what would otherwise have been a generous display of figures. Miss Clark had a neat entrance, ap- pearing first in an extemporized warship built during an instant's darkness on the stage by profile parts held together by the choristers. Mr. De Angelis was in- troduced by the conventional scheme of laughter off stage and a "0, here he comes now" speech. His first bit of business was to kiss the six show girls, after the manner of comic opera comedians since time began. When a comedian feels ill at ease and can't think of anything else to do, he kisses the show girls or chorus girls, or any skirt in sight. Among other small details it is per- haps worth mention that the choristers displayed only two sets of frocks, and that the "ponies" wore cotton stockings. Ruth.
