CORRESPONDENCE Unless otherwise noted, the following re- ports are for the current week: GHIGAGO By FRANK WZBSBEBO. VARIETY'S Chicago Office, Chicago Opera House Block. MAJESTIC (Lyman B. Glover, mgr.; agent, W. V. A.).—An unusually good bill considering late- ness of season. With the exception of two or three given prominent plsce the numbers sre more or lens familiar to the Majestic clientele. The feature Is Edna Wallace Hopper, her first appear Slice here In two years. She has several good ■ongs. scoring. Eddie I-eonard and the Gordon Brothers make their first appearance since the Cohan and Harris minstrels last fall, and offer a delightful arrangement of songs and dances, Leon- ard's singing particularly amusing a great amount of Interest. Violet Black and Co., In "In the Subway," proved a laugh producer. Farrell-Tay- lor Co. repeated and pleased as they always do. Boranl and Nevaro are contortionists and have comedy not misplaced. Dick Crollus and Co. again played "Shorty." probably suggested by "Peaches," the vehicle In which Mr. Crollus ap- peared with Wm. Courtlelgh. It gained many legitimate laughs and Is well constructed along the familiar slang lines. Vernon offers about the same ventilloqulal act seen seasons past, but it Impressed as usual. Green and Parker have well chosen songs. AMERICAN (Win. Morris, mgr.; agent direct). —James J. Jeffries, central figure. In his second week, with excellent business. Rostow, a Russian equilibrist, first appearance here, showed a num- ber of well devised tricks. Maymc Remington and her "ricks" served well. Five Juggling Jor- t dans show some clever club manipulating. Billy* Clifford, his first variety engagement here In sev- eral years, bns a good selection of material and had no dl(Acuity In convincing the audience. Shean and Warren returned with their travesty. Collins and Hart (second week) again proved the laughing hit. Maude Lambert Is among the few singers who can be credited with a solid hit st this house. Sisters Itappo gave their Russian dances. Booking will be directed through the Chicago office. Tbe bill for the opening week consists of Josie Mclntyre, Buckley and Martin, Herbert Perry, Eddie Leslie snd Four Affinities. Two shows a day will be given.—Owing to failure to deliver the theatre at Sana Soucl Park to the management of the dramatic company, which wss announced to open next Saturday, Virginia Harned, who was to have beaded tbe company the first week, will be transferred to the Bush Temple, following this week's vaudeville at tbe north side theatre. Miss Harned will appear In "Camilla," under the auspices of the Chicago school teachers, who "bought" tbe bouse for the week on s guar- antee. Tbe park theatre will open with Miss Harned a week later.—Tbe Folly snd Empire the* atres will close for tbe season at the end of this week. «r\N PRAINGieGO OHl'lIEUM (Martin Beck, gen. mgr.; agent, direct).—Week 0: Nothing ef particular conse- QSjencs among tbe newcomers, and bill ss a whole below par. Russell Bros. In evidence. The Fred Allen Co. got along quite well with a pleasing playlet. Two novelty numbers con- stituted tbe balance of the new faces, neither showing anything new or striking. The Four Normans had a club swinging number of a fair grade. Tbe Franelnl-OIloms submitted a melange of Instrumental music and acrobatics. Holdovers were La Valera, Hawthorne and Burt, Clay Smith and the Melnotte Twins, Dolores A Co. NATIONAL (Sid Grauman, mgr.; agent, S.-C, C. ReeHe).—Frank Bush, clever teller of tales, prime number. "Car 2, Stateroom 1." offered by Neta Allen A Co., quite an ordinary affair, tbe comedy reaching but few. Tbe act failed to gain average success. Mstt Keefe warbled his way to popularity. Bonnie Oaylor, a character singer of decided cleverness, made s good Im- pression. Lewis and Young, with song and comedy, pasaed with favor, as did Fautan la opening place with an aerial trapese routine. The Quaker City Four held tbe closing place, going in good form, thanks mainly to tbe black* face comedian, one of the best. WIQWAM (Sam Harris, mgr.; S.-C.-Western. States Jointly).—Tbe serious and absurd were hoth strongly represented among the line-np of tbe week. Mr. and Mrs. Robyna scored. Man- ning and Dixon went with equal strength. The Lucy Lucier Trio, a snsppy singing offering, wss soother number that registered well. Madam Doberty and her Poodles also on the bill, sharing the novelty honors with Tbe Volten Sherlek Family of Acrobats. Geo. Wilson furnished con- siderable laughs with bis monolog. and Qulgg snd Nlckerson added some with a musical offering. PANTAGKS' (W. Z. Tiffany, mgr.; agent. Western States; O. S. Burns).—Bill one of pleas- ing bslsnco with Mrs. Maude Evans playing a return dato as tbe stnr. There was none of the heavy demands on tbe box office that marked her previous appearance. Mrs. Evans' power as a drawing card 1m evidently on the wane, though her work shows decided improvement. Ethel Alton and Mazle Oliver presented "Tbe Sacrifice." Rlvoll, In a protean comedy, worked his changes with surprising speed, and though some were- quite crudely done, he scored heavily. Dawson and Whitfield had a batch of comedy that passed' with favor. The Four Dordens held the closing plsce with one of the best casting acta ever seen here. Jan. I-e Claire, harp soloist, won ap- plause. FISCHER'S (E. A. Fischer, mgr.).—"The Ad- vance Agent," the offering for the second week of the run, suffered sadly In comparison with the bright Introduction vehicle. Tbe cast was ill suited to Fischer's clever players and the at- tempt to blend melodrama with burlesque was hurtful. Ben Dillon figured well as the "rube." and Nellie Montgomery had an opportunity head- ing a Scotch singing number. The balance of the company were out of their element. The piece had some bright spots, and some well-chosen chorus numbers helped a lot, but as a whole the production was below tbe standard set by the opening. DENVER By HARRT X. BEAUMONT. Office Crystal Theatre Building. ORPHEUM (Mart In Heck. gen. mgr.; agent, direct).— Week 10. "Palace Girls," head. Marches* are well done, but singing below standard.
