It was never anticipated that the magnitude of the task would become beyond our control, but it did. The number of letters received totaled many hundreds, and this combined with the great mass of billing matter and programs considerably augmented the total. Without holding any brief for VARIETY we must bow our heads at the remarkable results. "All communications will receive prompt attention" must go to the wall. We find the task of answering one-half of the matter prodigious. Therefore, after sorting out several acts suitable for this country, we cabled them. Others, equally as good, are shelved for future reference. But the great, great majority will understand that the dignified silence signifies a polite negative. Many acts, however, will be written to later on. In the meantime we are still open to deal with good acts willing to pay transportation to and from this country. Once here all "jumps" are paid by the management. Eight shows (six nights; two matinees) constitute the week's work, with an extra matinee on public holidays. Remember salaries range from $80 to $200 weekly. Trusting this apology will be accepted in the same spirit it is intended, we remain, sincerely, MARTIN C. BRENNAN CHAS. F.
