Wednesday, Novfittber 10, 1954 Pi &J/J55V nADIO-TELEVI$I«!V 35 Washington* Nov. 9. High prices of color tv sets, while discouraging tint purchases, apparently are causing aboom in black and white sales. A report issued by the Radio-Electronics-TV Manufacturers Assn, last week shows that the industry; is now pro- ducing at the rate of nearly 10,000,- 000 sets a year. September Output hit a new record of 947,796 sets, based on. a five-week work month. Turnout lor the first nine months of: 1954; totaled 4,733,000 sets, Of which .only 14.538 were color units. Approximately 20% of receivers produced were equipped with UHF tuning. Untii recently* tv set production has been running substantially be- low last year despite the. opening of new markets as a result of the lifting of the tv freeze. Even if the current high rate of output is maintained for the balance of the year, total ^trunout for 1954 - will still fall short of 1953 when the Industry produced 7,2141000 sets. This was pnly slightly below the record year of 1950 when the Ko- rean war caused a buying rush. Black and white $et sales began falling a year ago when it became evident that the FCC would ap- prove the current system of color video, 'Production during Decem- ber, usually the best month, was less than half that of December of 1952. It was in December that FCC authorized NTSC color. Production this year continued to reflect . consumer 1 waiting-for- color resistance until June when production for the first time ex- ceeded the. comparable month - of 1952. Output has been pointing upward since. PROGRAM NETWORK George Gobel Show,NBC Golden Windows , . NBC Godfrey Sc Friends. CBS Arthur Godfrey Time . . . .. CBS. The day in the future that’s been visualize^ when heavyweight title fights might be staged in a tv cen- ter for an audience of several hun- dred million is going to be realized in. a somewhat abridged fashion with the launching of wrestling on WDTV right from its studio. Chan- nel 2 recently moved into the new Gateway Center and can accomnio-' date; an audience of more than 300, and they’ll sit in—at regular admis- sion-on the bouts. Anchor Sanitary Co., which spon- sors a late' night movie on WDTV every Wednesday at 11:15, is bank- rolling the idea on an experimental basis; For the present, wrestling will be a. once-a-month attraction, with pix. continuing for the other three Wednesdays., Alex Bentley, well-known impre- sario in the grunt-and-groan busi- ness, will be the matchmaker and Wayne Griffin has sighed to come on from Chicago as the announcer arid commentator. If wrestling works iup the expected interest, Anchor may drop the movies alto- gether and stick to the mastodon- murdering on a regular weekly basis.
