DISTRIBUTION
THE decline in motion picture rentals has dictated economies of a sort that were long predicted but were only intro¬ duced in 1960. There was a hint of this last year, when some companies assigned their physical distribution in Quebec to Associated Screen Industries of Montreal. A few gave up their 16 mm. section and assigned their small-gauge distribution to others.
In April, 1960, Rank Film Distributors of Canada Ltd., the exchange wing of the J. Arthur Rank Organization of Canada Ltd., officially dropped out of distribution and closed its branch offices. At that time 20th Century-Fox Corp. Ltd. under¬ took the sale and distribution of the Rank films.
In 1943 J. Arthur Rank established Eagle-Lion Distributors, Limited for the international distribution of his films. Ear¬ ly in 1945 Eagle-Lion Distributors was opened in Canada as a separate sales structure within Empire-Universal Films, which was headed by Paul L. Nathanson, who had sold Rank half of Odeon The¬ atres of Canada Ltd. in Nov. 1944. In June,
1945 Rank and Nathanson became part¬ ners in Eagle-Lion Distributors, opening branches.
Early in 1946 Rank acquired Nathanson’s interest in Odeon and Eagle-Lion Distributors. The company was renamed the J. Arthur Rank Film Distributors (Canada) Ltd. in April, 1951, and in March, 1957 this was changed to Rank Film Distributors of Canada Ltd.
On Oct. 1 Columbia Pictures of Can¬ ada, Ltd. and Paramount Film Service Ltd. undertook the operation of a distrib¬ ution company that represents a consol¬ idation of their sales and distribution operations under the title Affiliated Pic¬ tures Corp. Ltd.
The Columbia name came into Canada in Nov., 1926, replacing Independent Films Ltd., an Allen company which held the franchise in this country. In 1954 Colum¬ bia bought 50 per cent of the Canadian company and in 1959 acquired the rest. Paramount opened exchanges in Canada in 1920 as Famous-Lasky Film Service and became Paramount Film Service not long after.
