A child's toy called the traumatrope led the Belgian physicist Joseph Plateau to study a characteristic of the human eye Called the persistence of vision. He used this scientific fact to make up a machine that seemed to animate static drawings. Emile Reynaud developed Plateau's machine further and wajs the first to show animated cartoons. These cartoons of Reynaud, of which one complete story is shown in the film, are as full of fantasy and almost as scientifically accurate as the product of today's animation studios
