SHOWING FILMS.—(L.E., Elmhurst Street, Clapham, S.W.4.)
The Cinematograph Act of 1909 runs as follows:
“This Act shall not apply to an exhibition given in a private dwelling house to which the public are not admitted, whether on payment or otherwise.”’
If the films are not shown for profit, the performance may be claimed to be a purely private one. To avoid any possible interference, however, it might be as well to proceed as follows :
Your friends could band themselves together into a club and the subscriptions could be used to pay for the hiring of films. Should any guests who are not members of the club attend the performances, they should do so as guests of a member.
We think that, as the law stands at present, you are not likely to be involved in any unpleasantness. It might be as well to point out, however, that Section 4 of the Cinematograph Act of r1909 authorises any police constable—or any other officer appointed for the purpose—to enter any premises, whether licensed or not, in which a cinema show is being given in order to see that the regulations are being properly observed.

(a) A half-watt is one that consumes a half-watt, roughly, per candlepower emitted. It is a general term which was used when gas-filled lamps were first introduced to indicate their higher efficiency as compared with the earlier types of vacuum lamp. It is now practically synonymous with ‘ gas-filled.’ This higher efficiency is due to the fact that gas-filled lamps can be run at higher temperatures than vacuum lamps without damage to the filament.
