seems to us that it comes under Patent Law, and that therefore, a provisional specification must be taken out in the usual way. An authority on the subject of ‘‘ Copyright in Industrial Designs’’ states that where the author has evolved some purely mechanical contrivance, something possessing an advantage not in its appearance, but in the way in which it functions, it comes within the province of Patent Law.
DOUBLE EXPOSURE
In order to carry out double exposure on a
_ cine camera, it is necessary to mark the film | before taking the shot or alternatively to
carefully time the period of the part to be overlapped; i.e., if you wish to make a dissolve lasting three seconds you should start to count as you commence to close down the diaphragm of the camera. You can then wind back the film the appropriate distance. Your camera takes 16 picturesasecond. The best method is to mark the film on the edge by means of a small notch.
If more than one exposure is to be given on a section of film, the necessary adjustment must, of course, be made in exposure if two exposures are actually to be superimposed. This is a question of personal judgment, and varies from the position where no change is needed from normal exposure in each case (in cases where one section of the picture area is ‘‘ blanked off’’ by a mask in the first exposure and filled on the second) to cases where each exposure has to be half or less of the total normal exposure because the two sets of images are intermingled.
All film of the orthochromatic type or ordinary type can be worked in the light of a dark room lamp but for panchromatic film or Selo 9.5 mm. a green safe-light should be used. In both cases, the film should be exposed to light as little as possible.
SHOWING SUB-STANDARD FILM IN PUBLIC
9.5 mm. and 16 mm. safety film is noninflammable and can be shown in public without special precautions. It does not come under the Cinematograph Act of 1909. About a year ago there was a test case regarding the showing of safety sub-standard films. The County Durham police prosecuted the proprietors of a hall in Boldon for showing the film, ‘‘ Potemkin,”’ on the grounds that the 16 mm. stock used was inflammable and therefore came under the Cinematograph Act, 1909. A Home Office expert was called in to prove that the film was inflammable. The Jarrow Bench, however, dismissed the summonses with costs against the police, who subsequently appealed. Mr. W. H. Thompson, the London solicitor defending the case, was later informed by the solicitor to the Durham County police that the appeal would not be proceeded with.
FOCUSSING
When a lens is focussed on any infinitely distant object, e.g., some detail in a distant landscape, then the lens is said to be “at infinity,’’ and the distance between the lens and film is then equivalent to the focal length of the lens. In practice, owing to depth of focus and other characteristics, not only the distant objects but other objects between the
