k AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHER ts 6 CINEMATOGRAPHER a
the exaggerated perspective that the camera gives to such a shot are always effective, but do not forget to close down the lens diaphragm slightly before taking one of these upward shots, because filming towards the sky you get more light into the lens.
Scenes in which people walk into or across the picture can be given a new twist by photographing the shot with the people walking in from behind the camera, so that their backs are seen. If you wish, they can turn round after they are in the picture. Most amateurs introduce all their characters from in front of the lens.
If there is a lot of uninteresting foreground to a picture, as for example in a scene taken on the sands, get
down as near to the ground as pos¬ sible and shoot the scene with a slight upward tilt of the camera. This will cut out the uninteresting part and give greater prominence to the scene you wish to record.
Remember that scenes filmed from below eye-level make objects appear big and important. Conversely shoot¬ ing from above eye-level reduces the importance of the things seen, and objects photographed from a very high angle appear insignificant. Make use of this fact by introducing into your scenes of high buildings taken from the ground, a few shots of the street taken from a high window or the roof of a lofty building.
An unusual camera angle can some¬
times be obtained by filming not a scene itself but its reflection in still water. In this case take care not to get a reflection of the camera in the picture. Filming a scene reflected in a mirror provides another different slant. It may be a motor car mirror or a lady’s vanity-case mirror, or any other kind, but let your picture include just sufficient of the mirror and the hand holding it for the immediate surrounding to make it clear that the picture is a reflection, otherwise you will only get a reversed picture of your scene. Reflected shots like this must be filmed with the camera at an angle to the mirror to avoid including the camera and opera¬ tor in the reflection.
