Price 6d. Evans Brothers, Ltd. Precisely where other manuals are getting into their stride, Mr. Wastell in his latest handbook leaves off. Not from mere perversity, mark you, or a morbid craving for originality, but from a frank recognition of the need of the moment. Setting aside professional work, the vast bulk of prints produced to-day are made by the “ D. & P. man,” and very good many of them are. How many times also have we been told that the fate of a photograph is decided once for all when the exposure has been made ? What most camera-users need, therefore, is help in button¬ pressing and its preliminaries ; it will be time enough to tell them how to develop negatives and to make prints when development and printing come within their notion of photography. By stopping short where the writer does, he is able within the limits of a sixpenny booklet to deal adequately with photography as it is mostly practised to-day. He explains the camera and those of its appurtenances which concern the button-presser ; he gives the soundest advice on the choice of a subject and viewpoint, illustrated by some admirably reproduced pictures of his own as well as by some examples of what to avoid ; he deals with making the exposure and timing it ; he tells us how to fold up the camera after making the exposure ; and then — the curtain falls. There is no need to inform our readers that Mr. Wastell is clear, concise and adequate ; they know this from his articles for beginners in these pages. No one is better fitted by practice and by experience to show the novice how to make the most of his unfamiliar camera, with the very minimum of failure ; and he does not fall short of what we expect from him. There is a large field of usefulness for such a book, not only amongst those who want to know how to use a camera, but also amongst the many in whom we wish to create that appetite. A glance at its illustrations tempts one to read what its author has to say about producing such pictures ; and that once done, a camera of some kind becomes a necessity. The booklet may be obtained through many photographic dealers, booksellers and newsagents, or post free for yd. from Messrs. Evans Bros., Ltd., Montague House, Russell Square, W.C.i. 97 29
