The McXaoghton Circuit comprises drama houses, picture shows and regular music halls, principal among which are at Blackburn, Burnley, Halifax, Carlisle, Southampton. War- rington, Battersea, Batb, Bradford, Southport and Hnddersfleld. I will keep you in touch with these arrange- ments as they proceed, but I would advise any artists thinking of booking dates here to take careful note of them. Marie Tempest Ir not to come to your aide Just now after all, the Shnberts having re- leased her from her contracts for her American tour. She has Just finished her sesson at the Duke of York's and will reopen in September with a new play by Arnold Bennett, the novel- ist, called The Honeymoon, at the Royalty. Things remain awful dull here generally and will do so for the next four weeks. At present, with the exception of Kismet—which amaies one more and more on each visit on account of its magnificence—hardly a theatre Is doing any real business and a good many might just as well put the shutters up. I suppose a couple of summers like the present one would bring your custom of shutting the theatres in the summer right into general use. But the next summer may be one of the usual kind! By the way, there has Just died In Adelaide the actor who claimed to be the plainest man on the stage—one Grattan Coughlan. He once said: "I was shown the photograph of an Amer- ican actor who claimed to have the homeliest face oh earth. 1 eent him my picture. He wrote back: 'Mr. Coughlan. don't bit. I give up without a struggle. But my face Is my own; surely yours has been tampered with!' " I suppose there never has been a season In which so many American artists have been over this side as the present one. and a good many people have been asking me lately -why. taking Into account their abilities and home successes, they do not make more of a hit here. Of course, many of them do score heavily, but, as a matter of fact, the majority do not hit the mark as well as they should. And this, of course, is all the more remarkable, because Great Britain offers year by year an Increas- ingly large number of lucrative engagements, both In vaudeville and comedv. and English audiences—despite Marie Dressier and one or two others—are always well disposed towards American artists, provided, that is, that they don't start off' by cursing England and the English as soon as they get here. But, my own view is that the reason of the comparative failure of many artists from your side Is that they have little knowledge; if any. of' the ways of obtaining adequate publicity here, and they languish In the shade in consequence. After all, good publicity la just as necessary and is just as highly a specialized business here as In America, and any artist who comes here thinking that be can dispense with it makes the mis- take of a lifetime. I know, of course, -that we have a good many crooks in this line over here, who will Just grab all they can get from the performer," guaranteeing the best publicity, and then just forgetting hla extstence': bot. after all. these are In the minority. There are num- bers of good men here who do their work tho- roughly and honestly, and If any American art- ist, coming to this side, wants to be pat In toucb with one of. these, I should be only too glad to do anything In my power If they would communicate with me. The Swift Current Agricultural Society, Swift Current, Sask., report a fairly successful fair held July 19, 20 and 21. The fair grounds occupy a splendid site, comprising forty acres surrounded on three sides by the Swift Current River. A record of 2.15 was made over the race track this year. A complete list of snorts and games was held, and considering that the society had only three weeks of preparation tor the events, the results were considered sat- isfactory. Preparations will be made for a larger and better fair next year. A. W. Grotter is secretary. Madame Marantette. under the management of D. H. Harris, with her trotting ostrich, high school horses and the famous St, Patrick, the horse which holds the world's record for the high Jump at 7 feet. 10 Inches, was the feature attraction at the Hamilton County Fair, held at Carthage, Ohio, during the last week.
