The Bioscope, July 4, 1912. 47 NEWS FROM AMERICA. (From Our Own Special Correspondent.) Charles L. Gaskill announces from New York that he is exploiting “The Helen Gardner Picture Players,” which organisation plans to release twice a week high-class picture plays. In July the Kalem Company will release a big two-reel African feature film, entitled, “ Tragedy of the Desert.” « Profesaor Algot Lange, of the University of Pennsylvania, plans to leave New York early this autumn for a trip to South America. The Professor expects to spend at least three yeare exploring the Upper Amazon and obtaining moving pictures of the tribes of savages indigenous to that territory. The Selig Polyscope Company are engaged in producing several eingle-reel war dramas based on exciting incidents and happenings of the SpanishAmerican War of 1898. The New York State Exhibitors’ Convention was held at the Union Square Hotel, New York City, on June 19th. The Comet Film Company, which succeeded William Steiner’s Yankee Film Company, announce that they have refitted their studio and enlarged their factory facilities and equipment. The Film Supply Company announce the organisation of a new film-producing company, to be known as the “ All-Star.” It is said that this new depart ment will be patterned from the Society Film d’Art of Paris. The Kinemacolor Company have secured the official rights to take moving pictures of the college life and activities at the University of Pennsylvania. : The International Films Company have been incorporated for $14,000, at Camden, New Jersey. President Joujoun, of the Eclair Company, recently sailed from New York for France. The purpose of his visit is to present to the Eclair direc tors at Paris a proposition which was submitted to him by the Universal Film Manufacturing Company. The Eclair output is at present cleared through the Sales Company, and the general impression is that the Eclair Company will affiliate with the Universal combination. The General Film Company, at a recent meeting, elected the following officers:—President, J. A. Berst; Vice-President, George Kleine; Treasurer, S. Long; and Secretary, Paul “Melies. Google Carl Laemmle and members of one of the Imp stock companies recently visited the Latonia race track and secured a series of scenes which will be part of a novel three thousand-foot feature film which will be released this summer. It is rumoured that soon a new film organisation, composed of manufacturers not connected with the Universal Film Manufacturing Company, the Motion Picture Patents Company, or the Film Supply Company, will take the field. The Theatre Film and Supply Company, of New York, are exploiting a series of moving pictures showing bull fighting in Mexico. The Gaumont Weekly has three camera men at Chicago, securing moving pictures of Colonel Roosevelt and other national celebrities who are — attending the Republican National Convention. Mr. A. M. Kennedy has been appointed to direct the Animated Weekly, which will be released regularly by the Universal Film Manufacturing Com pany. Mr. Harry Raver is now acting as general manager of the Film Supply Company of America. The Universal Film Manufacturing Company are isuing a Trade publication known as the Universal Weekly, which is a combination of several house organs which were maintained by manufacturers now welded in the Universal organisation. Joaquin Miller, the Californian poet, recently posed for a moving picture company at San FranBisco. Mr. Henry Hibbert, of Bradford, England, has taken a very extensive series of moving pictures in and around Ogden, Utah. The Selig Polyscope Company have released a film version of Dumas’ “Monte Cristo.” Mr. Fred. Balshofer has been appointed by the Universal Film Manufacturing Company to look after their interests on the Pacific Coast. Mr. Balshofer will supervise the Bison, Nestor, and Imp Californian companies. The Lubin studio at Hollywood, California, is shut, down temporarily. Mr. Harry Kelly, acting manager, refuses todivulge thereason until he has conferred with Mr. Lubin, who is on his way to the coast from Philadelphia.
