rigs a?" The EXHIBITOR HAS HIS SAY (Continued from preceding page) Frelburger, Dewey Theatre, Dewey, Okla. Small town patrons. eee Dear Brat (Para)—Mona Freeman, Billy DeWolfe, Edward Arnold. I agree with Time magazine on this. Played Sun., Mon. Weather: Clear—Don Donohue, Novato Theatre, Novato, Calif. Smail town, rural patrons, ° °° Lemon Drop Kid, The (Para)—Bob Hope, Marilyn Maxwell, Lloyd Nolan. Hope has made better pictures than this, Many folks said it was silly. I managed to break even on it. Played Sun., Mon. Weather: Good—E. M. Freiburger, Dewey Theatre, Dewey, Okla. Small town patrons. <eie Mating Season, The (Para)—Gene Tierney, John Lund, Miriam Hopkins, This is a very clever comedy and should certainly please the most discriminating audience. In my opinion, movies are really improving, and if we could only convince our audience of this, we could smile again. Played Sun., Mon. Weather: Nice —Marcella Smith, Vinton Theatre, McArthur, Ohio. Small town patrons. sos Mating Season, The (Para)—Gene Tierney, John Lund, Miriam Hopkins. I played this instead of “Quebec” but it was below normal by quite a bit. However, this is undoubtedly my fault, since the film salesman said it was good, and after all, he knows more about it than I do! Played Sat., Sun.—dJosef Nehring, Floodwood Theatre, Floodwood, Minn. Sma town, rural patrons. nite Seplember Affair (Para)—Joan Fontaine, Joseph Cotten, Francoise Rosay. This is a well liked adult story and the customers okayed it. The kids were bored. We saw Italy the easy way. Played Fri., Sat., Sun. Weather: Rain—Frank Sabin, Majestic Theatre, Eureka, Mont. Small town patrons. ° * ° RKO RADIO Alice in Wonderland (RKO)—Disney feature cartoon. Comments were very much divided, although most of the customers said it was the poorest Disney feature they had ever seen. In the opinion of the manager, it Was a great disappointment. Played Sun. through Tues. Weather: Good.—M. W. Mattecheck, Mack Theatre, McMinnville, Ore. City, rural patrons. seh Bride for Sale (RKO)—Claudette Colbert, Robert Young, George Brent. This nice old comedy started out like a boxoffice recordbreaker on Sunday, slowed to a snail’s pace on Monday, and died the death of a dog on Tuesday—so the run ended up just out of the red ink, It’s a good story with a big cast, if the kind does anything for you. Weather: FPair—Bob Walker, Unitah Theatre, Fruita, Colo. Small town, rural patrons. nt IR Pep vs Saddler Fight (RKO)—TI played this with “Silver City Bonanza” on a weekend and darned near broke even. Although business was slightly above average for the change, due to the increased cost, I just about broke even. I considered this better entertainment than the Robinson fight, but it still didn’t mean much here. How did you fellows do with it? Played Fri., Sat. Weather: Good—Carl F. Neltzel, Juno Theatre, Juneau, Wis. Small town, rural patrons. ae Tokyo File 212 (RKO)—Florence Marly, Robert Peyton, Katsuhaiko Haida. If you’ve been sucked in, as I was, and have already bought this, don’t run the trailer. They'll stay away in droves, and the ones that do come will be shifting about all through the picture. What I want to know fs, how can & company produce a picture as good as “Flying Leathernecks” and one as poor as this one. I had to give refunds. Be safe—skip it. I wasn't able to. Played Fri., Sat. Weather: Clear.—Don Donohue, Novato Theatre, Noyato, Calif. Small town, rural patrons, * * * _ tre, Juneau, Wis, Rural patrons. REPUBLIC Golden Stallion, The (Rep)—Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Estelita Rodriguez, My, oh my, how good it seemed to check up on these two nights (Fri., Sat.)—just like the first few of Roy’s pictures that I ran. Lots of business and lots of nice compliments. This is one you can make money on. Weather: Fair. —Bob Walker, Uintah Theatre, Fruita, Colo. Small town, rural patrons. ndindis Leathernecks Have Landed (Rep)—Reissue. Using the stills from their recent war pictures on the one sheets. Republic gave the public an idea of a super-colossal action show. I bought it because of this, ran the preview (which was dark) and played to the poorest Tues.-Wed. crowd this year. However, this is the only failing reissue I’ve ever played from Republic. Weather: Warm—Ralph Raspa, State Theatre, Rivesville, W. Va. Rural patrons. a diac Rock Island Trail (Rep)—Forrest Tucker, Adele Mara, Adrian Booth. Just what we need for a weekend! It is excellent in all respects, but I agree with the exhibitor who said this didn’t have the draw it should. I did about average business doubled with “Kill or Be Killed” (UA) but it should have Made a Terrific Gross And Children Happy @TCHABOD AND MR. TOAD (RKO)— Disney feature cartoon. A nice little entertaining feature from Disney—nothing to draw a big crowd unless you do the drawing. I doubled with “Beaver Valley,” which is simply wonderful, and used the program for an Isaak Walton League benefit and got schools Iet out for it two days after they had opened. It made a terrific gross and a lot of happy children, so the club did all right and I made a few bucks profit. Played Wed., Thurs. Weather: Warm.—Bob Walker, Uintah Theatre, Fruita, Colo. Small town, rural patrons. bali been better. “Rock Island Trail’ has lots of action, good comedy, and is a picture that Mr. Yates can be proud of. Played Fri., Sat. Weather: Good.—Carl F. Neitzel, Juno Theatre, Juneau, Wis. Rural patrons. be ch 20th CENTURY-FOX As Young as You Feel (20th-Fox)—Monty Woolley, Thelma Ritter, David Wayne. An entertaining comedy of family life but Monty Woolley has never drawn here and I took a loss on it. This picture might do all right if backed up with five acts of vaudeville or a bank night lottery. Played Tues., Wed., Thurs. Weather: Good.— E. M. Freiburger, Dewey Theatre, Dewey, Okla. Small town patrons. I Can Get It for You Wholesale (20th-Fox) —Susan Hayward, Dan Dailey, George Sanders. I read the book and I liked the picture better. However, in small towns it won’t mean too much, and that was true here. It is really a woman’s picture, but some men came, too, and business was just slightly above average for the change. It is a very well made story of the dress business, with an outstanding cast. Played Wed., Thurs. Weather: Good. —Carl F. Neitzel, Juno Theatre, Juneau, Wis. Small town, rural patrons. BASS, UNITED ARTISTS Kill or Be Killed (UA)—Lawrence Tierney, George Coulouris, Marissa O’Brien. Too bad I didn’t have Provencher, the UA salesman here, or I’d have made him eat 6,000 feet of trash, He should have warned me about this dog. After this, I won't be able to show Lawrence Tierney here, as he made an awful fool of himself in this one. It has no action, no story, no nothin’. UA should have paid us for running this. Phew! Played Fri., Sat. Weather: Good.—Carl FP. Neltzel, Juno Thea oa6 Offered Money Back But No Refund Asked GECRET OF CONVICT LAKE (20thFox) — Glenn Ford, Gene Tierney, Ethel Barrymore. Thanks to a fairly fast booking, I made a couple of bucks midweek with this swell show. Mr. Freiburger wrote me about this one, telling how good it was, so I slapped my personal guarantee on it, and said that anyone who didn’t like it could have his money back. I didn’t have to make any refunds. It is very different and one of the best outdoor dramas of the year. Played Wed., Thurs. Weather: Like mid-summer. — Carl F. Neitzel, Juno Theatre, Juneau, Wis. Rural patrons. gins UNIVERSAL-INTERNATIONAL Borderline (U-I)—Fred MacMurray, Claire Trevor, Raymond Burr. Not worth a nickel here. Business was way off and no‘comments one way or another. Here again the trailer played up the murder angle instead of some good comedy scenes. Fred MacMurray was born not more than ten miles from here, but he doesn’t seem to pull in extra business like he used to. Played Tuesday. Weather: Warmer.—Carl F. Neitzel, Juno Theatre, Juneau, Wis. Small town patrons. pales Hollywood Story (U-I)—Richard Conte, Julia Adams, Henry Hull. A good little movie that is okay for the lower half. It has competent performances throughout, Played Sun., Mon. Weather: Clear.—Don Donohue, Novato Theatre, Novato, Calif. Small town, rural patrons. Brees Iron Man (U-I)—Jeff Chandler, Evelyn Keyes, Stephen McNally. If your town likes boxing and rough stuff, this may do all right, but it was the poorest grosser in many months for us. It is well acted but was a poor breadwinner in our case. Played Sun., Mon., Tues. —Edwin A. Falk sr., Roxy Theatre, Billings, Okla. Farmer, oilfield-worker patrons, . Mystery Submarine (U-I)—Macdonald Carey, Marta Toren, Robert Douglas. I played this one late, for I had my doubts about its drawing power. However, I am happy to re~ port that it not only pleased the audience but me as well. The picture is just a little too long for a double feature. It has a good cast. Played Fri., Sat. Weather: Cool—Ralph Raspa, State Theatre, Rivesville, W. Va. Rural patrons. nd) oi Prince Who Was 2 Thief, The (U-I)—Anthony Curtis, Piper Laurie, Everett Sloane. Excellent picture—the acting, story and color were the best since “The Flame and the Arrow.” Played Wed., Thurs. Weather: Cool. —L. Brazil jr.. New Theatre, Bearden, Ark. Small town patrons. aes WARNER BROS. Caged (WB)—Eleanor Parker, Agnes Moorehead, Ellen Corby. A _ tense, Siibereatineg woman’s picture—the story of women in prison. I ran this Tuesday only and broke even—the men wouldn’t come. There's a brutal prison matron built like Primo Carnera, and did the ladies ever hate her! One woman told me after the show that she had torn two hankies to shreds, so I guess it held them and gave them something to think about. Weather; Clear.—Carl F. Neitzel, Juno Then. tre, Juneau, Wis. Small town, rural patrons, eos San Quentin (WB)—Relssue, Pat o° Humphrey Bogart, Ann Sheridan. Beat of the trailer. It shows scenes that are not in the movie. It's a good thing this feature pleased the audience because I didn't get an kicks about those scenes that didn't sicibeas Tt is action-packed and has an excellent cast, ‘The trailer is good also, Played Tues. Wed. Weather: Rain.—Ralph Raspa, State Theatre, Rivesville, W. Va. Rural patrons. ese BOXOFFICE BookinGuide :: Nov, 3, 1951 i~ <a Ta
