Opinions on the Current Short Subjects shorts reviews Stranger Than Fiction , No. 86 Universal 9 1/3 Mins. The usual. Japanese stenography and typing with an alphabet that has over 20,000 characters; a lifeboat launching device; a tree that grew although planted upside down; a miniature city in a Michigan town; a water-going locomotive and a paralyzed young man who draws by holding a pencil in his teeth. Picture People , No. 5 RKO 10 Mins. Average. Irene Rich and her daughter go on a picnic; Tim Holt, in cowboy attire, puts his horse through a few stunts and John Barrymore and Rudy Vallee horse around over a script and scrambled eggs. Last named tops the reel’s content. The Fired Man RKO (Leon Errol Comedy) 20 Mins. Familiar, but tunny. Leon Errol is the stooge in a store who gets fired every time a customer complains. He gets himself involved plenty when invited by a customer to bring his wife and non-existent children to a beach house weekend. Bedroom farce-nightwalking ensues. Pantry Pirate RKO (Disney’s Pluto) 8 Mins. Average Disney. Technicolored Pluto, booted out of the house, returns when the aroma of a baked ham reaches him. Then he gets himself tangled up with a box of soap suds, misses out on the ham but reaches the doghouse in furious retreat before the colored cook returns. Mouse Trappers Universal (Andy Panda Cartoon) 7 Mins. Entertaining. Andy Panda’s pa is quite a hunter in this colored tidbit but he bogs down horribly when he sets out to catch a mouse. His attempts to corral the rodent however, are responsible for clever animation devices. Snow Eagles RKO (Sportscope) 8 Mins. Interesting , timely. The Sawtooth Range in Idaho is the scene and the action concerns skiing by experts, and photographic interpretation of various maneuvers. Like most skiing reels it is dramatically filmed, full of action. New York Parade Columbia 10 Mins. Interesting . Bridges, churches, skyscrapers, contrasts and the people who inhabit, utilize and effect them are interestingly caught and presented herein. ft ' — =h They Spent Christmas Under Fire Warner IOV2 Mins. Splendid. A sequel to the powerful "London Can Take It," Quentin Reynolds, war correspondent for "Collier's," this time shows and tells the kind of Christmas London's millions spent. There are no war planes and no alerts, but gripping depiction in short and staccato-like scenes of how the average Londoner took the blitz in his stride, made the best of it and managed to enjoy something, at least, of the "peace on earth" holiday in traditional British manner. Narration is intelligent and dramatically delivered. All profits go to English war relief. The Great Meddler M-G-M (Miniature) 11 Mins. Excellent. Unusual care in the preparation and material that has gone into this subject makes it one that should appeal to every type audience. Especially because it espouses the cause and background responsible for the American Society for the Prevention and Cruelty to Animals and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. Full credit is given one Henry Bergh, who, from his return to America after a legation post to Russia in 1864, single-handedly combats powerful opposition to establish his concepts of humanity. A fine script and expert handling make it outstanding. Information Please , No. 5 RKO 11 Mins. Up to snuff. Levant, Adams and Kieran are about to help Wendell Willkie make his return engagement with the quiz sheet. They tangle with posers on baseball, poetry, booktitles and the identification of presidential cabinets, lose 50 bucks to the Will Rogers Fund. Bagdad Daddy Universal (2-Reel Musical) 17 2/3 Mins. Fair. Fuzzy Knight, surrounded by Gertrude Niesen and a number of tumbling girl singing and dancing acts, in a Larry Ceballos harem, waves the magic wand and the entertainment ensues. It doesn’t quite come off. CHANGE TO ..A CHANGE i! ALTEC SERVICE FOR THE BETTER LTEC 250 West 5 7th Street New York City The Happiest Man on Earth M-G-M (Miniature) 11 Mins. Very good. Adapted from a story appearing in the O’Henry Memorial Award volume, this capsule drama is played to perfection in one sequence that is as compellingly dramatic as the potency of the nitroglycerine which figures prominently. Paul Kelly and Victor Kilian carry the story which tells of a down-and-out family man who just about forces a relative to give him a dangerous job in the oil fields so he can give his wife and children the necessities of decent living. It is all dialogue, the heart-touching kind. Going Places , No. 86 Universal 9 Mins. Average. This is a mediocre sightseeing tour of a few Mexican provinces with cathedrals, landmarks, relics of past grandeur, a snatch of agricultural progress, tourist attractions and the like. A Finer Place to Stay HOTEL FORT MEIGS The superiority of Fort Meigs Hotel is attested to by experienced travelers who appreciate its beautiful, comfortable accommodations and reasonable rates. Purple Cow Coffee Shop and Maritime Buffet serve the best food in Ohio. 250 ROOMS CfcO RH WITH BATH From TOLEDO ONE OF THE ALBERT PICK HOTELS BOXOFFICE :: February 8, 1941 81
