Charles C. Perry, as national canvassman, inducted the officers, with David Newman, property master, calling upon John E. Flynn, M-G-M district manager at Chicago and first chief barker at Detroit, to initiate the new members taken in. Mayor Edward J. Jeffries spoke, referring eloquently to the golf prowess of Howard, and Val Clare of CKLW took the stand as toastmaster. Major speech was by S. L. A. Marshall, author of “Blitzkrieg,” which was published a week ago. It deals with national defense. Others introduced, some giving brief talks, included: Harry F. Kelley, Michigan secretary of state; Judges Harry Keidan, John P. Scallen and Guy A. Miller; Ted O’Shea, M-G-M division manager; J. J. Maloney, M-G-M district manager; Louis Phillips, Paramount legal department; Harry Goldstein, Paramount district manager; Fred Mandell, owner of the Detroit Lions, and Bob Hall, singing rimester, who pinch-hit for David M. Idzal, assistant chief barker. A show from Ray Schreiber’s Colonial was presented for an hour’s entertainment to conclude the evening. Tablecloth Notes Charles D. Kidson, who is managing energetic Judge John P. Scallen’s campaign, was at our table . . . The judge, incidentally, has a show record way “back when” — he used to represent Bert C. Whitney and other old-timers . . . Adolph and Irving Goldberg seen at separate tables . . . Freddie Bonnem was long on the java . . . Professor Bob Corbin, UDT supervisor, was very impressive in that costume . . . Phil Brestoff, Michigan musical boss, had the jitters over the initiation . . . Retiring Chief Barker Harold C. Robinson surrounded by son Bill, his assistant, Andy Pasananen, and Bill Rick. Twin Department — Lou Lobar of M-G-M and L. C. Becker, American Seating, are almost twins — till you compare height . . . Ed Carlson and Lou Mitchell of the Kilbride houses exhibited a fondness for romantic songs . . . Jack Hurford of the Fox was about the last to arrive . . . Sol Berns efficiently handling the show for which he was responsible . . . John R. McPherson, National Screen manager, has transferred Variety membership here from St. Louis. J. Oliver Brooks, Butterfield booker, at the salesmen’s table with Ray Cloud, Eddie Westcott, Col. George McCoy and Claire Townsend . . .
