BOXOFFICE was the leading American exhibitor trade paper of the post-World War II era. But the publication had modest beginnings. In 1920, Ben Shlyen founded the paper, orginally titled THE REEL JOURNAL, in an office located in Kansas City's Film Row district. Like other regional exhibitor publications, THE REEL JOURNAL focused its attention on the local -- in this case, KC and the nearby territories that the city's distribution exchanges served. By the end of the 1920s, however, Shlyen had acquired or founded several more small exhibitor papers serving other US markets. In 1932, their titles all changed to BOXOFFICE, though they continued to be published in regional editions for decades to follow. -- Eric Hoyt, 2015

Multipurpose Snow Cone Machine Also for Snow Magic Sundaes Samuel Bert Manufacturing Co. has announced its newest snow cone machine which it calls the Super Model, a multipurpose machine which not only is capable of producing the best of snow cones, but also is adaptable for making Snow Magic sundaes and ices. This latest machine can be bought without any dispensers, or with two or with four dispensers, depending upon the concessionaire’s needs. The dispensers, when ordered, are an integrated part of the machine, so that the syrup is cooled and does not rapidly melt the ice when applied to the snow cone. The machine combines eyeappeal with efficient mechanical performance and large capacity. The Snow Magic machine is easy to operate and fully automatic, with no gears, no belts, no pulleys and requiring no oiling. A snow cone costs 1 14 to iy2 cents, and usually sells for a dime. The Hamilton Model PW, coin-operated personal weighing scale, placed in theatre restrooms, lobbies or cafeterias can provide a service to patrons and extra income for the theatreman. Made by Hamilton Scale Corp., it is designed and constructed for accuracy in operation and low maintenance. When zero adjustment is necessary, the operator can make the correction with a twist of the fingers. The scale has a confidential dial reading to 280 pounds, with weight chart for men and women. Coin capacity is 3,000 pennies. It has a heavy duty lock with two keys. Mechanism features few moving parts to wear, hardened steel bearings throughout and coin-trip catch to prevent re-weighing. The finish is white baked enamel, the platform is aluminum, and the head and base are gunmetal baked hammerhide enamel. Special color columns are available at small extra cost. A four-page, fully illustrated brochure on the new Futura projection arc lamps is available from The Strong Electric Corp. It describes in detail these new lamps which fill the 35mm and 70mm needs of all indoor theatres with screens up to 65 feet and drive-ins with screens up to 120 feet.
