20 their presence at the election which was to be held, a party of about twenty of the immi- grants sought out John Mason and declared their intention of turning back for the east. It came as a severe shock to Mason to learn that some of his friends were so dispirited as to arrive at such a decision, and his first impulse was to arfjiie with them. "You can't be soriou.s, folks," he protested. "Why, we'll bt m Oregon in a few weeks." " You meaii you hope to be in Oregon in a few weeks." countered an individual named Tompkins, who seemed to be the spokesman of the disheartened faction which had resolved to abandon the westward journey. " But we figure that even if you ever reach Oregon your troubles won't be at an end. They'll just be beginnm' in real earnest. So we're back- trackin'. Mr. Mason, and we're puUin' out right now." It was in vain that Mason endeavoured to dissuade Tompkins and his companions from desertmg the column. They were clearly determined to retmn oast, and at length John Mason shrugged his shoulders resignedly. Jeff Scott and Deadwood Hawkins had been in conversation with Mason when Tompkins and his party had accosted the leader of the train, and now Deadwood voiced an interroga- tion. "Who have you got to take .vou back east?" he inquired of Tompkins. "You need a guide, you know." A figure in buckskin had sauntered up while Mason had been trying to reason with the men who had resolved to turn back. It was tho figure of Deadwood's old acquair»tince, the BOY'S CINEMA veteran trapper Idaho Ike, and it was he who answered Deadwood's question. "They got me," he proclaimed. "The best guide this side o' Snake River." "You?" Deadwood ejaculated. "Why, you ain't no guide. I've seen you get lost in the back o' your own wagon. Say, Tompkins, if you're gonna have Idaho Ike to guide you I reckon you'll be lucky if you don't wind up in Mexico." The words were spoken in a bantering tone, and when Idaho had left the camp a little while afterwards with Tompkins and company, Dead- wood volunteered to John Mason and Jefl his true opinion of Ik»'s capabilities. "Idaho will get 'em through all right," he averred. "There ain't a better guide in the whole o' the West." "I'm glad to hear you say that, Deadwood," Mason rejoined. "But I sure wish Tompkins and his friends were going on with us." He was obviously distressed by the thought that the defeatist attitude of 'Tompkins and his party might spread through the train, and it was plain that he feared others might follow their example. But by the time night fell he was in a happier frame of mind, for no one else in camp betrayed any inolination to " give up." Moreover, the steers which had gone a-missing as a result of the stampede had been recovered by then, and that circumstance heartened everyone. Thus John Mason was in a complacent enough mood when he and Jeff and Deadwood and a large number of the colonists marched into Clearwater to attend the election, leaving the wagon camp in charge of the womenfolk W NEWFOOTY" f% GUARANTEED NEAREST APPROACH TO ACTUAL FOOTBALL EVER INVENTED OR MONEY REFUNDED. Every Tuesday and a mere handful of men who were detailed to guard the outfit's cattle and horses. Gaining the saloon, Mason and his con- tingent found it crammed to the doors. But as they appeared the citizens gathered there at once made a lane for them, and cordially invited them to stop up to a flight of stairs from which Sam Morgan had apparently been addressing the crowd. "Scott," the fur-trader said, promptly singling out Jeff, "I took the liberty of asking you and the settlers to come here to-night because it seemed to me you were the veiT man to fill the vacant post of marshal in this town. And now I have to inform you that you've already been unanimously elected." Leaning forward, Morgan started to pin the badge of the late town marshal on Jeff's shirt- front, but at that the young fi"ontiersman raised his hand in a gesture of restraint. "Hold on," he stammered, "I—I certainly appreciate the unexpected honour you and .your fellow-citizens have done me—but—I can't accept. I've already got a job." "With the Mason outfit?" Morgan drawled. "Well, I'm sure Mr. Mason and his people will release yo i from any contract, you may have made with them. The office of marshal will pay more than you can ever earn as a wagon boss." Jeff diew back a pace. "It isn't a question of money, Mr. Morgan," he said. "It's a question of lo.valty to folks I've come to regard as my friends. As I say, I appreciate the honour you've done me. Nevertheless, I'm sticking with the wagon train, and " But the sentence was never completed, for it was then that the night was rent by an outburst of gunplay beyond the eastern limits of the town—an outburst of gunplay which Morgan had been waiting to hear—and which told him that, according to plan, Yellow Snake and his marauding braves had swooned out of fie eloom to launch a lightning raid upon the Mason camp.
