28 BOY'S CINEMA (Continued from page 2.) "Get him away from mo." lie said to the trainer, "he may be harmless, as you say, but " His faee expressed his doubt. Jackie was removed. As he was going past the kitchen, un- chained, his curiosity got the better of him. Young coloured actors were there preparing imitation food for the cameras. They knew a lion was in the scene, but their nervousness got the better of them when Jackie suddenly came through the kitchen window. Roscoe, the short- logged cook, was the first to get going. He hadn't practised running for a long time, but that didn't matter. Those who 'watched him cross the set say his feet hardly touched the floor. The other coloured actors also put up a good show as they followed him. Jackie might be docile, as his trainer declared, but to others he was still a lion for all that. " Gulliver's Travels." It seems strange that no one before has thought of filming the above inter- esting and fantastic tale by Jonathan Swift. "Gulliver's Travels " is among the most widely read of books and con- tains excellent material for the screen. Universal are now busy on the idea. The picture will require a good deal of expert trick photography, and the job has been given to Karl Frcund, Uni- versal'* noted cameraman. Trick photo- graphy is his special branch of work, and for several weeks he has been experi- menting in secret on some of the epi- sodes which will be in the film. He ex- pects the work to occupy sorne .months, though every effort will be made to complete the film in time for a Christ- mas showing. A Real Fugitive. During the making of "I am a Fugi- tive from a Slave Gang," in which Paul Muni took the lead, there was in Holly- wood, a man who feared every shadow and started at every footstep behind him. Robert E. Burns had reason to be ner- vous in this way, for though it was his story which was being put on the .screen, he was an escaped convict wanted by the authorities in the State of Georgia. Having wriggled out of the clutches of the law, he made his way by devious detours to San Francisco and thence to the film city. The film company, in- formed of his intention, had urged him not to come. But Burns wanted to have a hand in the filming of his book. He put up in an apartment house not far from the studio. And every time he went out he would glance nervously about him. His presence in the tiliii city was kept a secret from the stars and hunters after publicity, for it was feared that once the news spread he was in Hollywood; the situation might be- come uncomfortable for the film com- pany as well. Paul Muni, however, was allowed into the secret, and lie met and .talked with Burns, so that .he might qualify himself for his part .in. the film. Meanwhile. the authorities continued their search. Somehow or other they learnt where he was. Burns began to realise his danger. He sent a note to the company one morning saying, "Things are getting too hot for me here; I'm moving on." He left Hollywood after that, and then its inhabitants woke up to the fact that there had been an escaped convict in their midst. Answers to Questions.
