November 26, 1932 I PS0T33TS 'DTT 70E LOOiCIOH The Southern Eadio Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey filed a protest this weel: with the Radio Commission against the loca.ting of the new 50,000 watt transmitter of Station VifOR, Newark, N. J. at Tremley, Linden, N. J. The company states that it now has two stations at that place, MlUJ and WI.IV, engaged in "public correspondence" with radio stations in Bolivia and that the locating of the new transmitter there "will interfere with and interrupt the general pTiblic radio service now being rendered by said stations IVINJ and "'’/I, IV." Under the rules of the Commission the case automatically goes to hearing. No date has yet been set. •JEHM GRITTED LICENSE RENEWJLC The Radio Commission this weeic sustained Examiner Ralph L. Walker in his Report No. 395 in which he recoiriiiiended that Station WRHM, Minneapolis, Minn, be granted a license renewal. The station operates with 1,000 watts power on fre¬ quency 1250 kilocycles. It operates during all hours not allocated for use by stations WCAL, KEMX and l^TLB-WGMS. The Corainission denied the application of the station to operate unlimited time. The Comraission in its opinion, also, granted license renewals to Stations WC-AL, KEMX and WLB-WGMS. The opinion states that all four stations are render¬ ing a generally good service but that station WRHM "is precluded from rendering a complete broadcast service, encountering some difficulty in arranging its program schedule, and it is undoubtedly true that the assignment of unlimited time to 'TRHM won.ld benefit that station." However, the Commission points out that Minnr-apol is now receives good service from at least three stations other than 'IRHM "and it does not appear that there is any substantial need in that area for the additional service that might be rendered by that station should its unlimited time op^-ration be authorized, or that such service would be ma¬ terially different from that now received." INSTTRANCE BROADCASTS ILLEGAL The Court of General Sessions of New York County this week held that a New York radio station may not broadcast advertisin-T messages for a, foreign insur¬ ance company not licensed to do business in that state when the purpose of the I M broadcast is to assist in the solicitation or procurement of insurance from >1 residents of the State. An action was instituted by Attorney General Bennett ^ in behalf of the State Insurance Department against the International Broadcasiy' m ing Corporation (WOV) for broadcasting advertisements for the Union Mutual Life Company of Dos Moines, Iowa, which is not authorized to do business in New York. Violations of the penal law and section 50 of the insurance lav/ were alleged^ The defense of the broadcaster that the State could not interfere with its operation because of the interstate nature of broadcastineg was summarily dismissed by Ju.dge Levine. He said he would not permit "a foreign insurance company to enter this State, unless properly qualified, by resorting to the devices of em' ploying a-s an 8g:ency in the transaction of its business in this Stake."
