NBC on Oct. 16 will launch its second season of Great Plays, to be presented each Sunday in cooperation with the American Library Assn. Whitford Drake WHITFORD DRAKE, New York, 55, president of Electric Research Products and a former commander in the U. S. Navy, died at Chatham, Mass., Aug. 24 after a long illness. Mr. Drake attended Harvard University, and was graduated from the Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1906. Joining the construction corps of the Navy, he received an M.S. from M.I.T. in 1909. He resigned after 17 years in the Navy, including service in the World War; in 1920 entered private business; in 1924 joined Western Electric; in 1927 was made manager of the acoustics department of ERPI; vice-president, 1928-36, and executive vice-president until advanced to the presidency in 1937. Mr. Drake is survived by his wife, two children, two brothers, and two sisters. Charlie's Degree BEST buildup since Bing Crosby took his troupe to Spokane last winter to perform while he was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Music by Gonzaga, his alma mater, was the broadcast from the Northwestern U. campus Aug. 28 of the awarding of a special honorary degree of "Master of Innuendo and Snappy Comeback" to Charlie McCarthy during the regular Chase & Sanborn program. Dean Dennis of the School of Speech, from which Edgar Bergen was graduated, made the award to Charlie in person. Rest of the program came through from Hollywood as usual.
