The confidential film notes sent to operating companies are not for distribution to the public but are to provide background information to prepare the introductory remarks made by the company representative before the showing. The Value of Today's Film Festivals Film Festivals: Shell films have won over 80 awards in 27 film festivals from Cannes, France to Vancouver, Canada: from Cork. Ireland to Montevideo. Uruguay; from Edinburgh. Scotland to Capetown. South Africa. These have great prestige value, but the increased number of festivals throughout the world has tended to discredit this form of activitv. However, nowadays some festivals specialize in scientific and technical films which are the industrial sponsor's immediate interest. Attendance by company staff gives an opportunity to meet other film sponsors and users who may offer guidance and share experiences. It is possible to see a wide variety of films which would be difficult to view otherwise. The final assessment of the advantage of attendance can only be made after examining the list of people who attend each particular festival. Participation often brings good press publicity.
