"TRANSLATIONS CAN BE TRICKY"
— says Mr. David Rockefeller, President, Chase Manhattan Bank, New York. "Advertising should be meticulously translated for foreign use."
As examples of misunderstandings which con occur, Mr. Rockefeller cited popular slogans which emerged os "CORSPES BY FISHER" and "HERTZ ^MKES YOU A CHAUFFEUR."
"TRICKY IS A MILD WORD. FAULTY TRANSLATIONS CAN BE DISASTROUS '
Here is a recent example:
THE CASE OF THE CASTRATED AIRPLANE
An aircraft manufacturer requested us to furnish o norrator to record Spanish to a film track for Latin-American distribution. The script had been translated by the manufacturer's employee "WHO KNOWS SPANISH PERFECTLY."
There were many language and grammatical errors, but in particular this LULU: ENGLISH: "This airplane is capable of climbing to on altitude
of . . ." SPANISH: las translated by the manufacturer's employee' "Esfe
avion es CAPABLE de SUBIR a UN ALTITUDE de . . ." The obove translation re-transloted to English "This airplane
is CASTRATED TO MOUNT to ONE altitude of . . ." ... CORRECT TRANSLATION: "Esfe avion ESTA CAPACITADO PARA
ASCENDER A UNA ALTITUD DE . . ." Thanks are due Mr. Rockefeller for bringing the metier to the attention of those interested. However FAULTY TRANSLATION can be more than TRICKY. OFTEN IT IS DISASTROUS TO THE SPONSOR'S IMAGE AND INTERESTS.
OUR TRANSLATIONS ond ADAPTATIONS ore GUARANTEED FAULTLESS'
. . . BECAUSE our translators ore EXPERTS
