JERRY H. SOLWAY DEAD AT 44 The industry was shocked and saddened by the sudden death, on Tuesday, November 23rd of Jerry H. Solway, President and Chief Executive Officer of Astral Films Limited and its associated companies. Death came suddenly following heart surgery. One of the youngest top executives in the industry, Jerry Solway parlayed a small, ailing distributing company into a multi-million dollar complex of distribution and exhibition facilities. Only a few months ago his company went public. A devoted member of Variety, Jerry was next in line for the Chief Barker’s job. He was active in various philanthropic activities and communal affairs, especially the Baycrest Home for the Aged, and was a member of Holy Blossom Temple in Toronto. Friends and associates by the hundreds came to pay their final respects at the service conducted at the Temple on Wednesday, November 24th. Mr. Solway is survived by his wife Joan, daughter of the late Izzy Allen, son Jeffrey and daughter Penny, also his father and two sisters. ® KANE AND RIPPS UPPED AT METRO John Kane, whose most recent assignment was as branch manager for National General in Detroit has been CANADIAN FILM DIGEST appointed Division Manager for M.G.M. of the Detroit territory, and Paul Ripps, who had held several sales posts with Metro until 1970 when he resigned to join Warner Bros., has rejoined M.G.M. as Assistant Division Manager in the L.A. Territory. Both appointments are effective immediately. ® RON EMILIO HEADS C.M.P.D.A. At the annual meeting of the directors of the Canadian Motion Picture Distributors Association in Toronto, the following were elected officers for the coming year. Mr. Ronald F. Emilio, General Manager of MGM in Canada, President; Mr. George Heiber, Canadian General Manager for U.A., Vice President; Mr. Herb Mathers, President of Bellevue Film Distributors Ltd., Treasurer, and Millard S. Roth, who continues as Executive Director of the Association. @ AMPTP RE-ELECTS ALL OFFICERS At the Association of Motion Picture and Television Producers’ recent meeting, all officers and directors were re-elected for a further term. AMPTP. officers re-elected were, Lew R. Wasserman, chairman, Jack Valenti, President, Charles Boren, Executive V.P., Alfred P. Chamie, V.P. and Secretary, Eugene Arnstein, V.P., Wilton R. Holm, V.P., Robert T. Watkins, Treasurer, and Saul C. Weislow, Assistant Secretary. K. GORDON MURRAY FORMS NEW PRODUCTION COMPANY TRANS-WORLD FILM CORPORATION is the name of a new production company organized by K. Gordon Murray for the specific purpose of producing general release features for the action and Drive-In market. K. Gordon Murray was elected president of the company, and Mrs. Murray, secretary and treasurer. Board members elected were George Kerasotes, Sidney J. Cohen, Paul Roth, Frank Rubel, Jack Armstrong, Ernest Stern and William Weisen. The position of Vice-President was left open until a general sales manager is appointed. An initial six films are to be produced for distribution in 1972, with shooting to start in late November. All will be aimed at the GP rating category, and will follow an orderly release pattern of saturation with stron T.V. campaigns. DON WILDER TO ROSE-MAGWOOD PRODUCTIONS One of Canada’s best known cameraman-directors, Don Wilder has joined the Rose-Magwood organization in Toronto, and will direct commercials, industrial and public relations films. Mr. Wilder’s past work has earned him two certificates of merit from the Canadian Film Awards, one Academy Award nomination, three Bronze Awards and a Silver Award from the International Film and TV Festival of New York, and four Best of Product Category Awards from the American TV Commercials Festival. Mr. Wilder began his career with the National Film Board in 1944 where he remained for fourteen years as a cameraman and director.
