TOM CALLENDAR RETIRES FROM F.P. An assistant secretary of the company, and for some years head of the film statistical department, Tom Callendar retired from Famous Players effective on September 2nd. One of the oldest—in terms of service— employees of the company, Tom has worked in various capacities within Famous Players for nearly fifty one years. GRAFF UPPED AT NATIONAL GENERAL A frequent visitor to Canada, Richard Graff, vice-president of National General has been named v.p. of theatre operations a newly created post in which he will work closely with Nat D. Fellman, president of National General Theatres in all areas. Graff joined NGC in 1964 after various sales posts with Universal. NORMAN JEWISON TO PRODUCE FOR U.A. Canadian producer-director Norman Jewison whose latest work is FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, has been signed to produce BILLY TWO HATS a U.A. Western movie to be made in Yugoslavia in the Spring. David A. Picker, president of U.A. has also announced that Jewison will make a movie version of ATUK, Canadian novelist Mordecai Richler’s hilarious novel. 104 MORRIS SURDIN TO SCORE ‘HOSPITAL’ Producer Howard Gottfried has signed Morris Surdin, one of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s most promising composers, to deliver an original score for Paddy Chayefsky’s THE HOSPITAL. The assignment marks the first American film project for Surdin, a longtime friend and former associate of Arthur Hiller who is directing the picture. FAMOUS UPS. JIM DUDLEY Mr. George P. Destounis, president of Famous Players has announced the appointment of Jim Dudley has head of the F.P. Operations in the United Kingdom. For the past couple of years Jim Dudley has been assistant to Doug Gow, District Supervisor of the company’s theatres in British Columbia. Prior to that Jim managed a number of theatres in and ~ about Vancouver. ° TWO CANADIANS WIN GRANTS FROM ACADEMY Word has just been received that two Canadian film-makers under contract to the National Film Board have each been awarded $2,500.00 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The recipients are Willie Dunn, a 29 year old Micmac Indian who produced THE BALLAD OF CROWFOOT, and Fernand Belanger, 28, who has directed two short subjects for the Board. Sydney Newman, Government Film Commissioner said that the $5,000.00 grant had been given to the Film Board by the Academy with no restrictions as to how it was to be used. The Board decided to divide the money between the two moviemakers to help them finance work they are doing with video tapes. @ 1.A.T.S.E. OFFERS SECOND ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP Trustees of the Richard F. Walsh Foundation — named for the president of the International organization — have announced the opening of the Second Annual Scholarship Awards Program for the sons and daughters of 1.A.T.S.E. members throughout the United States and Canada. This award will be presented to a high school student in his senior year during the 1971-72 school year. Presently four students are participating in the first scholarship program, each receiving $500.00 per year for a four year period and totalling $2,000.00. With the awarding of the second annual scholarship, five worthy students will benefit from the Richard F. Walsh Foundation Scholarship Program. RICHARD F. WALSH
