The Film Festivals Bureau began its operation on January 8, 1973 with the following mandate: ‘‘to assist in developing more effective methods of film promotion publicity for distribution and exhibition abroad and to assume the co-ordination at film exhibitions in Canada and abroad’. The Bureau annually organizes and co-ordinates the Canadian participation at Cannes as well as in over 100 film festivals. It also provides grants to Canadian Film Festivals. Another function of the Bureau is to certify Canadian films for the Capital Cost Allowance Program and foreign sales purposes.
