PROFESSIONAL FILM DIRECTORY i For over eighteen years, more than 240 cinematographers and assistant cameramen have become members of the Canadian Society of Cinematographers. The Society founded the magazine “‘Canadian Cinematography” which later became ‘‘Cinema Canada”’ and now, published independently, is considered Canada’s foremost film magazine. Members of the Society have always been very active participants at meetings of the Canadian Film Awards, the Canadian Film Development Corporation, the Society of Film Makers and other groups in the film community. Through meetings held on the first Monday of each month, September through May, the executive strives to have interesting and informative discussions on current and new equipment, new techniques and problems that may affect professional cinematographers. Several members are instructors at universities and colleges across Canada and the Society periodically organizes special classes for assistant cameramen and others interested in learning the essentials of cinematography. By active and financial support to the CSC, professional cinematographers are able to make their collective voices heard when problems arise in the film industry and possibly find mutually acceptable remedy. Each year the CSC holds an awards function and trophies are presented, to members only, in the following categories: Feature/TV Drama CSC Award Documentary CSC Award TV Commercials CSC Award News Roy Tash Award In addition, and not necessarily each year, the Bill Hilson Award (a miniature Amniflex) is presented to a member of the CSC who has performed outstanding service to the Society or has made a special contribution to the art of cinematography. Also, members have won intemational recognition and awards including the coveted ‘Oscar.’ 144 MEMBERSHIP Membership in the CSC is divided into the following categories: Affiliate Membership The applicant must be professionally employed as an assistant cameraman or camera operator or be active in a field directly related to cinematography such as teaching or studying cinematography at a recognized Canadian institution of learning. Affiliate members have no voting privileges and are not permitted to serve on the board of directors. They have the right, and are encouraged to attend, all membership meetings and may serve on committees. Associate Membership The applicant must be professionally employed as a cinematographer or camera operator for a period of at least three years. Teachers of cinematography may be considered for this category provided they have sufficient previous practical experience. Affiliate applicants must be in good standing. Full Membership The applicant must be professionally employed as a cinematographer for a period of at least ten years and must also be fully qualified to assume the responsibilities of Director of Photography. Altematively, the applicant must have to his credit, exceptional achievement as a cinematographer. Only full members are entitled to use the initials ‘CSC’ after their names on screen credits, correspondence and stationery. Full membership is not automatically acquired after ten years nor does the ten-year limit always apply. Full membership is granted only after the membership committee has screened an applicant’s film examples which must show an ability to light interiors and exhibit a high standard of excellence. Full membership applications are reviewed once annually and are granted only upon unanimous approval of the board of directors. Associate applicants must be in good standing. Honorary Membership Honorary membership may be awarded by the membership committee to Canadian laymen who have promoted, or are promoting, through their efforts, the interests of cinematography in Canada. Honorary members are not active, as such, in the regular business of the So ciety. Life Membership Life membership is awarded by the board of directors to members who have retired from active cinematography and who have been particularly valuable to the Society in the past. Membership is retained without payment of dues.
