The Canada Council, created by an Act of Parliament in 1957, revised in 1977, to promote the arts, carries out its work mainly through a broad program of grants and services to artists and arts organizations. The Council also has some responsibility for promoting Canadian Culture abroad, and administers the Canadian Commission for Unesco and special programs financed by private donations. The Council reports to Parliament through the Secretary of State and appears before the Standing Committee on Broadcasting, Films and Assistance to the Arts.
Film Production Grants
Applicants must have produced at least one film or have established a professional reputation in the visual arts. Applicants must provide supporting footage in the same millimetre format to be used in the proposed production.
Projects being produced or sponsored by other federal film agencies are not eligible for Canada Council grants.
The maximum amount available for a single film production is $40,000 to cover total or partial production costs. Applicants receiving grants of less than the amount requested may reapply for supplementary funds for a total not exceeding $40,000.
Applications must be received by a certain date in order to be considered at the next Canada Council meeting: March 15 for announcement in June; June 15 for announcement in September; September 15 for announcement in December; December 15 for announcement in March.
Other Grants
Filmmakers may be eligible for assistance through other grant programs administered by the Canada Council. These include: Arts Grants “A”; Arts Grants “B”; Short Term Grants; Project Cost Grants; Travel Grants; the Explorations Program.
