120 GOVERNMENT Greta Torrie, Kenora Mary Ellen Whaley, London The Ontario Arts Council offers various forms of assistance in film areas to artists in the province, and the following brochures are available from its offices: Film and Photography Grants Filmmakers may apply for up to $7,000 for short, experimental, original 16mm films (full-time film students are not eligible). Senior grants up to $20,000 are available to experienced filmmakers. All applications must be supported by a 16mm film. Writers may .apply for up to $3,000 to write original, creative material for the screen. Sponsors of a film festival or seminar may apply for funds to cover fees of visiting filmmakers to participate in workshops and to lead discussion groups, and to cover a portion of administrative costs. Franco-Ontarian Grants Franco-Ontarian filmmakers may apply for up to $13,000 in two separate categories. 1) pre-production costs for short films 2) financial support for apprenticeship with a recognized professional filmmaker. Arts/Education Grants A filmmaker wishing to work in a school is required to conceive the project, find a school and negotiate a fee. The filmmaker and the school make a joint application for a grant of up to three-quarters of the filmmaker’s fee to a maximum of $1,500; a maximum of $200 for project expenses; and up to $600 for travel and living expenses if the project is more than 100km from the filmmaker’s home. The Canadian Film Certification Office is part of this section. It administers the 100% capital cost allowance program, under which investors in certified Canadian films and videotapes (both short and feature length) may deduct 100% of their investment from their taxable income in one year. Certificates for films and videotapes are issued by the office upon satisfactory completion by the producer of the appropriate application form.
