Wayne Clarkson Toronto, September 4 13, 1980 Begun in 1976, the Toronto International Film Festival (Festival of Festivals), is a non-competitive event extending over 10 days, offering a wide selection of recent Canadian and international feature and short films, as well as retrospectives, special events, craft conferences, seminars and symposiums Guest directors and film personalities are in attendance. The 1980 Festival includes, for the second time, a “Trade Forum” for Canadian and American industry representatives to exchange informatior on the ‘business’ of filmmaking. M5E 1E5 (416) 366-9266 The Golden Reel Award is sponsored by the Canadian Motion Picture Distributors Association, and is presented to the producer of the Canadian feature film which has achieved the highest level of commercial acceptance, and having the broadest public appeal in the Canadian theatre in the past year. Started in 1976, the first Golden Reel Award was won by Harry Gulkin for his Lies My Father Told Me; Lawrence Hertzog received the 1977 Award for Why Shoot The Teacher; and Allan King, who was also director of the film, won the Award in 1978 for Who Has Seen The Wind. The 1979 Award was won by Dan Goldberg for Meatballs. The third Festival (Ottawa ’80), in addition to the internationally adjudicated competition, will feature retrospectives and tribute programs. Special events are also arranged, and designed to advance the Art of Animation, and to create an environment where animators from around the world may gather in a true spirit of international communication and understanding. For the first time, electronic and computer animation will play a major role in the Festival. In addition to competitive categories, workshops and demonstrations are planned. THE ONTARIO FILM INSTITUTE AWARD This Award for Excellence in Canadian Cinema is given annually to a film or film maker which best represents indigenous Canadian values in the cinema.
